update: lenacapavir is approved, public rollout is expected as of april 2026, it’s a twice-a-year HIV prevention shot for people who are HIV-negative and at risk, it’s more effective than daily PrEP pills, it gives you six months of protection per dose, it’ll be as low as R450.
so the HIV prevention shots are expected to be avl in south africa between late 2025, early 2026. lenacapavir is pending SAHPRA review while CAB-LA has been approved, & the estimated cost is R2300-R4400 per person, per year but the department of health may negotiate lower pricing
