Thus, an animals’ preference for sugar over sweetener depended their “gut sense.” Read on for much more inside!! Or watch here: https://t.co/xXEPDYXypZ (6/7)

Usually, animals drink much more sugar than sweetener. But when neuropod cells were silenced, the animals drank equal quantities of both, trying to figure out which one contained the preferred sugar. The animals could no longer discern sugar from sweetener (5/7).

In other words, the gut sends a distinct message to the brain when the animal consumes sugar compared to sweetener. This signal underlies the animal’s preference for sugar (4/7).

Sugars are sensed by sodium glucose co-transporters on the cell surface and transmitted to vagal neurons using glutamate as a neurotransmitter. Conversely, sweeteners are sensed by sweet taste receptors and transmitted using ATP (3/7).
