Happy to belatedly announced that RAISING RAFFI is out this June. It has some very solid blurbs and is also just 240 pages. People have reported not even noticing that they read it. You can pre-order at the n+1 store, or wherever fine books are sold.

They will get nowhere with Trump by arguing that it's unfair and illegal for Putin to annex territory. But they might get somewhere by arguing that if Putin promises not to invade again, they should lock that in--not with Article-5-"like" guarantees, but with actual Article 5.

And it seems like Zelensky and the Europeans wisely pushed on the part of Putin's proposal that was ambiguous (the security guarantees) rather than the part that was concrete (control of Donetsk region).

Very important point in this thread. Ukraine has been pushing for security guarantees since the start--it is the U.S. (and others) who have declined to provide them.
So here's the bizarre thing. Steve Witkoff, Marco Rubio et al are now arguing that Russia's acceptance of Art. 5-style guarantees for Ukraine is some kind of an incredible breakthrough that amounts, per Rubio, to Russia's major concession.

After 21 months of devastating conflict with Israel, Gaza’s most vulnerable civilians — the young, the old and the sick — are facing what aid groups say is impending famine.

The mass starvation & killing of Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli gov’t is a chillul hashem, a desecration of God. Jewish leaders who criticized Zohran Mamdani for three words he doesn’t use should raise their voices loudly here as well. https://t.co/o4NpjHlJqZ

A fear of being labelled antisemitic still deters American Jews and Jewish institutions from taking a position that is morally correct.

Fascinating AI transcription. I understand not knowing who Khasbulatov ("husband") and Chubais ("Chewbice") are, but why replace apple cart with "Apple Car"? Apple doesn't even make a car!

I wrote about Tim Weiner's new book about the CIA in the 21st century, and his previous one (about the CIA in the Cold War). Richard Pipes once called the State Dept "world's largest law firm." CIA is more like world's largest graduate seminar--with guns!

The covert agency has long believed in the power of knowing one’s enemy. But these days the threats are coming from above.

Sure, you can quibble with the wording of this poll and its sample size (14 people), but actually I think this is a pretty reasonable position supported by roughly 85.7% of Americans.
How many people agree with the following obvious statement: Logan Rozos, the NYU student who spoke out against Israel's war on Gaza in his graduation speech, and Salman Rushdie, whose commencement speech at Claremont McKenna was cancelled, should both be allowed to speak.

The art of the deal. If you, Putin, don't do as we ask, we will abandon your courageous and determined adversary!

You kind of have to see it to believe it.
Vance: “We should be able to move beyond the mistakes that have been made in the past…If Russia is not willing to do that, then we’re eventually just going to say, ‘This is not our war. It’s Joe Biden’s war, it’s Vladimir Putin’s war. It’s not our war.’"

The correct critique of the Biden Administration's Ukraine policy is not that they didn't send enough weapons but that they once again underestimated how dangerous and unprincipled their successors would be.
“If you don’t engage in good faith we’ll have to abandon our support for your adversary” is quite a negotiating position.
