'Why Are Alaska's Rivers Turning Orange?' won a Kavli 🙌 I'm humbled & thankful to @AAAS to be recognized with the oldest US science journalism award. Covering climate science feels more high-stakes than ever before... Award: https://t.co/I13V76G4ho Story:

Streams in Alaska are turning orange with iron and sulfuric acid. Scientists are trying to figure out why

If the Kremlin says the US national security strategy is "largely consistent with our vision," It's probably not a good US national security strategy
bbc.co.uk
The Kremlin welcomes the starkly worded document, which does not cast Russia as a threat to the US.

My inaugural monthly newsletter is out, with some stories I wrote about COP30, Antarctica & cloud seeding in Iran. Plus stories I didn’t write about a twins experiment to learn about Mallory on Everest, among others. https://t.co/RJw6vdJUs0

I’m also starting a monthly Substack newsletter called Ice Mushroom, which is the name for a giant blob of rime ice that can form on windward rock faces. Please subscribe to follow my stories, as well as interesting news about icy & mountainous places:

Personal news 🚨: I’ve started a 10-month gig as environment news reporter at New Scientist, the most popular weekly science & tech magazine I'm in the office on a mobility scooter as I recover from a broken femur & frostbite on a mountain in Norway—thank you for all the support!

I wish this nugget had been out in time to include in the podcast: 49% of IPCC climate scientists surveyed are in favor of small outdoor experiments to test solar geoengineering:

An exclusive New Scientist survey of leading scientists reveals widespread concern that schemes to tweak Earth’s atmosphere could launch within decades in a risky bid to cool the planet

40+ glaciologists just published a paper calling geoengineering to save the Arctic & Antarctic a dangerous distraction. But other scientists argue that with ice melting we at least need to research them. I told CBC about sea ice thickening in Nunavut https://t.co/61HFwY7Amg

Trump’s EPA canceled a $20m grant to fortify the Alaska Native village of Kipnuk against flooding. Now 121 houses in Kipnuk have been destroyed by flooding, & a total 1,800 people have been evacuated in one of the biggest airlifts in Alaska history. https://t.co/zldIA1jH1G

You know who else doesn't like the TIME cover of Trump? His friends in the Russian government. "Only sick people, people obsessed with malice and hatred –perhaps even perverts – could have chosen such a photo," says the foreign ministry spokeswoman.
theguardian.com
Despite the glowing story, the cover earned the ire of the US president with criticism of his appearance

It's ridiculous that most major US news networks are copying Trump's mispronunciation of antifa ("an-TEE-fa"), which obscures the word's origins as short for "anti-fascist," rather than "AN-tee-fa" as most knowledgeable people say:
theatlantic.com
The president strategically invokes the group in his speeches to stoke fear and shift discourse away from systemic racism.

The revolution in Nepal & vote called for March are “a test of whether fragile democracies can withstand the volatility of the digital age.” Meta & X have refused to moderate Nepali content, allowing misinformation to run rampant. @Diplomat_APAC
thediplomat.com
A sweeping social media ban helped topple Nepal’s government. The harder task now is delivering reforms and elections that restore democratic trust.

In the late 80s the conservative (!) government brought in stronger clean water rules in the UK. Through the 90s + 00s river health rose. Salmon returned to rivers like the Thames. Then, in 2010, the Cameron government, told regulators to ease up on enforcing environmental rules
On Sunday, Chicago hosted an organised swim in the Chicago River - once so polluted it was 'untouchable', decades of environmental protections brought the river back to life - now those protections are in peril. https://t.co/4rAppdrHrC
