I have started cross-posting my blogs to ! If you use , please follow me there for more of my blogging content! I started off by posting an updated version of my AI & Kubernetes blog there:
After ~2.5 years of actively working toward it with the help and guidance of 4 different managers, I'm proud to share that I am now a Senior Engineer at Google! 🎉💖
@ashleymcnamara
I was told I would never be able to get a CS degree because I wasn't good enough at math. Guess who has a CS degree with a minior in math? THIS LADY.
When I first started my contributor journey, I couldn't have imagined where it would take me. Now I'm leaving
#KubeCon
NA 2023, not only as a SIG Co-Chair, but with THE BUCKET! It's an honor & a pleasure to support the community. I look forward to continuing to grow together!
I was gonna announce my new gig Monday but because of the snow in Seattle, today feels more like the day. So I'm excited to share that I've joined
#Google
#DevRel
! I'll be focusing on Anthos and, per usual,
#Kubernetes
things! I'm excited to learn and grow with this great team 😄
4000 followers!! 🎉🤯🎉 Thanks for joining me, everyone! I mostly tweet about Kubernetes, with some occasional general cloud native, devops, and work/productivity type stuff thrown in. Let's all learn together! 😃
I was in a group discussion recently about AI & content creation. People kept talking about ways to get the AI to generate better content and I was like, "that's not what I want it to do." I want AI to proofread and critique my work so I can improve, not for it to do it for me.
Today I say a fond farewell to Oracle Cloud. I've grown a lot during my 2.5 years here and I'm so proud of what my team has accomplished. But opportunity called and I'll be moving on to an exciting new role. Watch out for more in January!
My first
#KubeCon
keynote is in ONE WEEK! 😮🎉 I'm excited to share some knowledge about multicluster Kubernetes architectures~ And all self-illustrated!
Every year I say I will get up super early so I arrive at the conference on time. I am the power that will defeat sleeping in! Let's go, Kubernetes Contributor Summit!! 🎉🤩🚀
@K8sContributors
#KubeCon
I finally created the intro to Kubernetes blog post I've been working toward for years. Enjoy my illustrated cookie company analogy for learning the basics of Kubernetes, featuring a hands-on tutorial on GitHub by Christina Webber!
I am SO excited to announce that the
@CloudNativeFdn
has selected me to be a
#CNCFAmbassador
!! I love sharing my passion for
#CloudNative
& can't wait to do it as a part of this amazing group of people. I also seem to be the first one from
@OracleCloud
!
What I've liked most about being a
@CloudNativeFdn
ambassador is that it's given me greater tools & opportunities to be a resource for others. I'm excited to continue supporting the CNCF community as part of v2 of the program!❤️
.
@softwarecircus
starts at 10AM CEST! Way too many great folks on my feed are speaking at this - many of them in costume! Plus it has an Alice in Wonderland theme! Here's my Mad Hatter 🎩🐇

You're an inspiration to me. The same person also thought I would never have a career in tech because I'm too "artsy". Not necessarily that I couldn't (though clearly there was some of that), but that I wouldn't enjoy it. Current me says porque no los dos?
Don't miss the highlight of
#GoogleCloudNext
- saying Happy Birthday to me! You can find me in the Innovator's Hive at the Volkswagen/GKE/Apigee demo station, next to Duet AI & the "Build scalable apps faster" demo (GKE & Cloud Run scaling - so cool!)
Today is my 3-year Google-versary! I've officially worked at Google longer than anywhere else. (Though it really doesn't feel like it.) I'm still impressed every day by the amazing people and technology I get to work with. ❤️
If you're at
#KubeCon
, come on by and find me at the Google Booth! I'm conducting interviews today (Wednesday ) and tomorrow (Thursday) for
@KubernetesPod
, any experience level welcome!
I'm quite happy with my most recently created and recorded talk! 🎉🎉🎉
It's about Kubernetes multicluster architectures, tools, and reasons for them. I'll post a link once it's publicly available, but I'll also be sharing some of the same info in my
#KubeCon
keynote!! 🤩
The
@CloudNativeFdn
did a lovely Humans of Cloud Native piece about me! 💖 It explores a bit about my open source work with
@K8sContributors
and how I got to where I am 😄
With no real-life excuse to wear my Cute Keyboard Club jacket from
@sailorhg
, I thought I'd show it off today + my cute keyboard (keycap set by
@cassidoo
&
@sailorhg
) and my VI cheatsheet mousepad from
@SoSplush
! (I got the git mousepad too.) Appreciating these great creators!
PSA for anyone who speaks at/wants to speak at events:
Put your Twitter handle on your slides! I'd love to livetweet your work & take pictures for you, but it's hard to tell you I'm livetweeting you if I have to take time to go find your Twitter handle 🥲
Oh Kuber-tree, Oh Kuber-tree,
How complex are your branches
My forks are always out of date
I guess that this is just my fate
Oh Kuber-tree, Oh Kuber-tree,
Can't I just use the GUI?
My favorite thing from
@IanColdwater
and
@mauilion
's talk is:
Kubernetes is a container orchestrator made up of containers. So container exploits work on Kubernetes.
Containers are Linux. So Linux exploits work on containers. And thus on Kubernetes.

People often ask "Why isn't Kubernetes a good fit for a personal project?" At its core, K8s was designed to enable & manage apps at scale. If your project doesn't involve apps at unmanageable scale, Kubernetes probably isn't the tool you need. Not that you can't use it anyway.
Today my boss said that he perceived me as being really good at collaboration. He pointed to specific collaborative work I've done recently. That made me so happy! 😃💜
I HACKED A KUBERNETES CLUSTER TO RUN A CRYPTO MINER MWAHAHAHA!!! Check out the replay & try it yourself on ! Thanks to
@TabbySable
&
@bradgeesaman
for walking me through . Next time, we defend!

"What's it like to be the only black person at KubeCon?" 'I get preferential treatment. People know me and they think I know what I'm talking about. But if you're unknown, you don't get those benefits. This con is about people.'

Something I told a mentee this morning: I didn't start out in Kubernetes because I had strong opinions about open source software or anything. I just wanted to do something fun and useful, and open source Kubernetes is where I found it.
Well my flight is 4.5 hours delayed, and I arrived 3hrs early back when it was on-time. At least I'm not bored! And I got to spend some lovely time chatting with
@IanColdwater
and
@TabbySable
too!
Kelsey told this story about a speaker in a wheelchair who wanted to attend a speaker dinner upstairs. People offered to carry her, but that's not what she wanted. She wanted to participate *like everyone else*. Help others help themselves.

Now at the Kubernetes Contributor Summit: IPTables, the end of an era with
@Itsuugo
and Dan Winship. TL;DR - move away from IPTables if you're not already.

In March of 2018, I went to a Docker Meetup in Seattle where
@krisnova
moderated a panel featuring
@jbeda
,
@brendandburns
, &
@cmcluck
. I sat in the audience and drew the moment live, with all of them as gophers. Apparently on this day in 2019, I colored it. We miss you, Nova.
"Kube cuddle," "Kube control," and "kube-c-t-l" were all used by the co-chairs during the SIG-CLI maintainer track session. So the jury is really and truly out on that one. Live your life. Enjoy your favorite pronunciation of kubectl!
#KubeCon
(P.S. "Kube-ehktl" FTW!!!)
I'm making a renewed effort to create regular blog posts. (With illustrations as much as possible!) What are some Kubernetes/Containers/Cloud Native/DevOps type topics you would like to learn more about?
I hadn't posted about my KubeCon sessions yet because it hasn't felt real. But I hope whether you're joining in-person or virtually, you'll join me for my two sessions. Including MY FIRST EVER KEYNOTE 🤩😱🤩
I recently found this again. In 2011 I was a sophomore at Virginia Tech. I wrote an essay and was granted sponsorship from the Women in Technology group to attend
@ghc
. I never would have imagined I'd start working
@googlecloud
8 years later. 😄
@the_thagomizer
My first ever talk at a conference- I fell off the stage. Luckily it was during the tech check before the actual talk so no one was there. Scraped up my elbow. I was in a good mood after that, because it can only go up from there, right? 😆 (It went great in the end!)
Stop by the

booth at

for STICKERS! Our artisanal sticker selection is brought to you today by
@ashleymcnamara
& myself! And for those with a selective palette, we have a limited number of beautiful pins of the K8s logo blowing bubbles!
CNCF Ambassador of the Year, Anais featured my KubeCon CFP blog as a "Community Highlight" in her weekly newsletter! I'm so honored, and so excited about the ways my post seems to be encouraging the community! 🤩💖
At each contributor summit, we try to make sure the volunteers have something identifiable to wear. This year it was aprons, & I designed the embroidery on them! So proud to be wearing it for my Thanksgiving cooking & baking today! (Credit for first photo to
@CloudNativeFdn
)
PSA: There is a talk on the last day of KubeCon EU titled "What Anime Taught Me About K8s Development & Tech Careers" -
@AnnieTalvasto
, Camunda. Is it the talk that made me start planning my schedule? Yes. Yes it is.
Let's go! Final
#KubeCon
NA 2023 keynotes!
@TheNikhita
kicks us off with a poem to thank the
@CloudNativeFdn
Events team for putting together this amazing event!
First meal in Paris LIVED UP TO THE HYPE 🤩😋
This was at a small restaurant called L'Insoumise, near the convention center. It was INCREDIBLE! Descriptions are in the alt text of each image.
Do y'all want Paris food coverage? Because I could do that.
Some advice for those preparing Kubecon CFPs:
1) The track you select indicates your audience - frame your talk to target that audience!
2) The Description should talk about the benefits to the audience,
The Benefits should talk about why the audience wants those benefits.
I'm so excited to be part of the Developer Keynote at Google Cloud Next! Make sure you tune in to learn about customizing AI with RAG to create awesome features for your users! (In the context of a miceoservice style app on GKE, in this case 😃)
The expo hall at
#GoogleCloudNext
is now open! This morning I'm running the Quizathon station at the App Dev section of Innovator's Hive. Come play a round with me!
It's cool to hear the ways folks today can understand Borg, a technology like 15 years old, via papers about it from 6 years ago- by comparing it to their modern experience using its open source descendant,
#Kubernetes
today.
Don't know if you've heard but Google is throwing me a MASSIVE birthday party at Moscone in SF. They've even booked LL Cool J, The Roots, AND DJ Z-Trip to perform! They're calling it "Next," a very fitting theme for a birthday imo. Hope to see you there!
