Prisons are at capacity - read this report to find out why: ā€˜The number of people given immediate custodial sentences has fallen from 98,044 in 2012, to 67,812 in 2022. This suggests that the prison population increase is not driven by more convictions.’
post.parliament.uk
This POSTbrief examines the drivers and implications of prison population growth in England and Wales, as well as future policy considerations.

The next day @HMP_Humber with @k_tsintsadze to discuss the experiences of ethnic minority prisoners and ways of building better relations with staff. No magic wands but a drive to implement positive change and engaging leadership are key to inclusion for all! #YPG_D&I #ZMT

How is it possible that #HMPPS invested heavily in its dedicated Race Action Programme over the past three years and we still haven’t seen any shift in reducing racial disparity in prisons?! PAVA spray used disproportionately - Russell Webster

I’m on my way to the sixth prison this week: met with some incredible people who live & work there, observed their routine struggles, shared with them the burden of despair and the pressure of finding hope. I’m angry at the silence & ignorance that enables the politics of denial.

We’ve made no secret of it, we believe we’ll run out of space, we’re amazed we have lasted this long before going bust. We don’t know the governments plan, but we hope it includes some type of safe, early release scheme to create space, they’ll get our support if it does.
