Sonera bought a 3G permit from Germany around 2000. Each Finn paid $1000. They didn't use the permit, it was worthless.

I had made a PNG encoder in the past (2007) for large scale use and found more than 77 design mistakes in the PNG format itself. Those mistakes made efficient encoding impossible. So partly it was about aesthetics and wanting to improve what was done before, too.

Finns had the best phosphate mine in the world because it has less heavy metals than respective mines elsewhere. What to do? Sell it to Norway. After sale farmers have to pay double for the fertilizers. Amortized to now it is about a loss of $500 per Finn.

Browsers developed by a single guy: "Sure. Let's do it!" and implements it in a day.

Ideally browsers would offer save as jpeg, copy as jpeg, etc options for the new image formats.

I write jpegli is created from jpeg xl heuristics (derived from pik, derived from guetzli, based on butteraugli).
Journalist finds an faulty "benchmark" of codecs, and concludes what I write is impossible, and decides... Jpegli is derived from AVIF.
Sigh.

I think it is time to ask Chromium folks to re-evaluate jpeg xl after Apple added support and Adobe is even building future formats (Digital Negative) on jpeg xl. One possibility to ask this is to star this bug.

Old LEDs of old devices always just work. They literally never fail.
Modern LED bulbs fail in ~1000 hours.
The LED bulbs are designed to run at 100+ degrees Celsius and fail quickly instead of running forever at 50 degrees. They could make it right.
