28 June 1914. Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb member of Young Bosnia who sought an end to Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was arrested for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife. He undoubtedly fired the fatal shots.

Those who couldn't keep marching were shot as they lay in the snow. John was one of the lucky ones. He came home just a few days later and lived into his 70s - long enough for me to meet him - I’m the little boy on the right in the last photo.

On this day in 1945 the British army liberated Stalag XIB at Fallingbostel, Germany. Among the prisoners was my great grandad, Lance Corporal John Conway. He was captured in June 1940 after fighting in France and spent the next five years in many different POW camps. 1/
