The next time a warning comes, I'll pause. I'll pay attention. Because imagine a lot of the people who didn't make it probably thought they'd be fine too. Stay safe out there.

I work with people who lost family in the flood. Two former co-workers are gone. It's tragic. It's personal. It's made me rethink how I respond to risk. How easy it is to dismiss warnings. How quickly I assume this one won't matter. How I confuse familiarity with safety.

Tragedies like this should cause us to reflect on how we would react in the situation. Would we take the warning seriously? Would we leave? Would we even believe something bad could happen? Most of us assume we'll be fine because most of the time, we are.

This doesn't excuse failures in planning or response. But it does explain why people don't always react the way you think they should. Hindsight is clear. Real life is messy.

A buddy of mine, and his extended family, were on the river this weekend. They're safe, thankfully. First alerts came in, and their response was: We'll be fine. That's not neglect. It's human nature. Familiar danger feels less dangerous—until it isn’t.

It's easy to armchair-quarterback after a tragedy. Floods are common along the Guadalupe. People get used to them and ignore alerts. I live in tornado country. We have alerts and sirens. Do we run every time? LOL, no. We glance at the sky and move on. Just another day.

I’ve always wondered how smart people can be so dumb. For all its flaws, there is no better system than a two party system. All a third party can hope to do is split the vote for one of the two primary parties. It has never worked. It will never work.

This is amazing, in a scary way. The last clip shows just how fast the water rose. There are many camps along the Guadeloupe—many with cabins along (or not far from) the riverfront. Some of those people didn’t have a chance.
