But we suggest that in contests that are about admitting candidates to a closed entity, like a discipline, profession or even organization, evaluators discriminate in order to maintain the boundary (and identity) of the entity they are representing. @HECParis @ImperialBiz @unibo

We conducted this analysis using data on evaluation decisions for more than 40,000 academics. Prior work had suggested that multidisciplinary scientists, or unfocused individuals more generally, are discriminated against because evaluators (wrongly) believe they are less skilled.

Academic disciplines do a lot of gatekeeping, so academics with leas focused identities can be dinged by purists in their fields. Worse, this paper finds that (at least in Italy, the data source), high-performing boundary spanners are penalized much more than low-performing ones.
