It's happened at last: the guardian leaving twitter was the stimulus needed and bluesky has exploded. Come on over & help recreate the wonderful community of nature/climate experts, journalists, activitists and just generally interested folk we used to have on here.

Today we have Nick Salafsky talking about “The Role of ‘Gold-Standard’ vs. ‘Aluminium Standard’ Impact Assessments in Conservation Practice” (3pm UK time, 10am ET) @Society4ConBio
#TuesdayswithTeamCounterfactual (from the impact evaluation working group of the Society for Conservation Biology) has been my favourite seminar series since it started 3 years ago. I am delighted to have taken over as co-host. Register here to know more https://t.co/qsMrmWw3DD

Love cashew nuts? Did you know they depend on pollinators? @iris_berger_'s work @CamZoology shows that Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) in India strongly increases numbers of pollinating insects on cashew flowers. Pictures by Oli Broadhead https://t.co/tj7dsUQmVU

Our paper with @juliapgjones, Hannah Wauchope, and Paul Ferraro out in @Nature on "Causal claims, causal assumptions and protected area impact" responding to a paper by Brodie et al.

Brodie et al., of course disagree with our conclusions and it is right and proper that they get the final word. Their response to our piece is certainly worth reading. https://t.co/xuH8Ejaqm8

Thanks to my fabulous co-authors Jonas Geldmann, Hannah Wauchope and Paul Ferraro. Thanks also to @mattstruebig and his colleagues who let us use their beautiful camera trap images from Borneo in this thread.

We also disagree with the way Brodie et al claim to measure spill overs, but this thread is long enough so you need to read the article to discover that critique. https://t.co/tKs869faLd

BUT the data the authors use comes from recent measurements, decades after protected areas were established. As such, instead of controlling for bias, they introduce bias through two well-known mechanisms (see the SI). https://t.co/tKs869faLd

Brodie et al compares biodiversity inside & outside protected areas, matching on forest structure & accessibility. If measured at baseline this could be a valid design as these could be confounders (affecting exposure & the outcome) 📷 https://t.co/tKs869faLd

Holding my hands up: some of my papers are certainly not clear enough about what drives exposure to the action and did not test for the influence hidden confounders. We are all learning. https://t.co/Ej4uwJDgcp

To infer the impact of a conservation action, we must determine what drives variation in exposure to the action. Then choose a design which, dependent on causal assumptions, allows causal claims (at least within defined bounds).

Unfortunately the study design used by Brodie et al cannot conclude that protected areas caused an improvement in biodiversity, and does not say anything useful about spillovers from protected areas into the wider landscape. https://t.co/tKs869faLd

Brodie et al brought together an impressive dataset (>1300 camera trap stations, >1000 eBird locations). They claim to show that PAs have positively impacted wildlife &, crucially, that these benefits spillover. https://t.co/brqIyf4zSu

Ecologists are increasingly interested in causal inference from observational data, but our training focuses on predictive inference. By pointing out issues with Brodie et al’s design we hope to help advance our field https://t.co/tKs869faLd

It doesn’t feel good to criticize other’s work: but this is how science advances. In Nature today we respond to a high-profile paper (by Brodie et al.,) about the impact of protected areas on wildlife in southeast Asia. https://t.co/tKs869faLd
