Theory not supported: patches of woody habitat in S. Indian rice landscapes do not enhance crop yields by providing ecosystem services, unless at least 10% of total area. They do support tree-affiliated birds at all levels of cover. Paper by @Iris_Berger_

I’ll be giving a short online talk today at 2pm BST on the impacts of a nature-based solution for sustainable food production (ie zero budget natural farming). There is still time to register: https://t.co/9Vk5AlLx5D

We argue that studies must quantify the extent of embedded small-scale habitats at which their contribution to production through enhanced ecosystem services exactly balances the forgone production. See Figure 5 in

This means forgone food production has not been accounted for.

Natural habitat patches can boost crop yield via the provisioning of multiple ecosystem services. However, most studies only assess short-term yield effects at field rather than landscape scale and rarely consider the land taken out of production by habitat patches.

We think that key information missing from the land-sparing/sharing debate is the empirical relationship between landscape-level food production and the proportion of native vegetation cover embedded in agricultural landscapes.

The Andhra Pradesh it was the unusually late rains at the end of last year that have led to significant yield losses for cashew farmers (and farmers of other crops too).
“The wheat harvest losses, which occurred across India, have left the farmers in terrible debt, having loaned money from a middleman to pay for seeds and fertiliser, but all finding themselves with at least 50% less grain to sell.”
