I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated.
Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp. Despite how difficult this job can be, I am proud to be a foreign correspondent at The Washington Post.

Spot on thread here from my reporting partner @juliejohnson LAFD brass publicly slammed our report of rekindling early on. And now have ignored it altogether in after-action report. That is precisely where lessons are to be learned for future CA and LA wildfires.
In January while reporting on the Palisades Fire, @mgafni and I heard from fire survivors about a coincidence. The Palisades Fire started in the same spot as a fire that burned less than a week earlier on New Year's Day. They wondered if the two fires might be connected 🧵

These companies want to be “non-banks” that can accept deposits of your money and then not have any legal obligations to protect it—which lets them use it to speculate on crypto etc—and not have FDIC insurance. They need to kill the cfpb to do that.
There's a reason Silicon Valley investors hate the CFPB & it's not because it's terrorizing Americans. Just the opposite. They hate the CFPB because it goes after fintechs that rip people off --fintechs people like Marc Andreesen are invested in. Don't be gullible.

This is alarming: The highest-ranking career official at the Treasury Department is leaving after a clash with allies of billionaire Elon Musk over access to sensitive payment systems. Those payment systems distribute ~$6 trillion in US gov't payments. Only a few people are

A MUST-READ Rent price gouging in Southern California. @LAist @radiowagner reports When LAist asked why the advertised rent for a Bel Air home had risen so sharply, real estate agent said she was getting another call and hung up. #LosAngelesFires #California
A furnished Bel Air home went on Zillow today for $29,500 / month. A few months ago, it was asking $15,900. I called up the agent. She said she told her client to re-list the home after this week's L.A. fires. "People are desperate," she said. "You can probably get good money."

I grew up in Altadena in my great-grandmother’s old home. It’s safe but a few blocks away is devastation. Childhood friends lost their homes. Places I knew my whole life are gone. I wrote about this special community w/ @brittny_mejia + @MelissaGomez004

The Eaton fire cut a brutal swath through Altadena and a cherished way of life in this eclectic foothill community it upended.

A few notes on this morning's #Tornado Warning for San Francisco from @NWSBayArea (I am still traveling, so my live interactions are still somewhat limited): 1) Yes, a formal warning was issued by NWS for San Francisco this AM based on a suggestive radar signature. #CAwx [1/7]

I was traveling when this story broke and missed it, so when someone told me in person that my former employer planned to add an "AI bias meter" to judge his own newsroom's stories, at first I refused to believe them. It was just too stupid to be true

Yesterday's bomb cyclone off the US West Coast near peak intensity, accompanied by an atmospheric river. One of the most amazing satellite photos I've ever seen.

The Oakland A’s were killed by greed. Do not allow the people responsible for this to spin it any other way. John Fisher did not have to move this team. Major League Baseball and its owners did not need to be complicit in it. This was a choice. A wrong one. History will sneer.

From ‘property of antifa’ to ‘the woke agenda,’ memes leaning into the UC Berkeley stereotype have gone viral thanks to the ‘Calgorithm.’
