There are a few things about the DEI in Medicine discussion that really drive me up the wall… 🧵 1. For starters, the DEI is not affirmative action🙄, there is usually no mandate to have a “quota” of diverse students/residents. Ppl speak of it like it is to push an agenda.

Also, as a person who has been a minority med student, grad student, and resident…. Please stop using DEI when you want to say BLACK (*or insert another minority group here*). It's very obvious what you mean, and you're not fooling anyone ✌️🏾

3. Lastly, medicine is not the pure meritocracy people think it is. Pre-med/Med school is becoming more “pay to play” by the year, and the latter half of medical training is primarily driven by subjective assessment by our superiors. We all have grinded and deserve to be here.

2. The assumption that having diversity in a particular field would result in lower standards is an insidious notion. Again, striving to promote a diverse and inclusive environment is not saying, we need __number of __ kind of person.

Black boys and men feel deeply too. We cry, we need love, and a hug can change our day. We’re not superhuman; we’re human. Let’s remember that.

Truly one of the best series ive watched in a long time! I’ve studied both of these great men at various points throughout my life and it’s great to see the assumed “dichotomy” between them challenged. Also, Betty and Corretta getting their flowers was great to see 10/10

The plaintiff’s attorneys have nonetheless seized on the NBME’s focus on Nepal as impermissible under the Civil Rights Act, comparing it to racist policies like “stop and frisk.”

It’s funny how we’re saying the problem is that’s students aren’t working long/ hard enough and we’re not questioning whether the actual medical education should be updated/changed. Just a thought…

In this episode of Not Otherwise Specified, hosted by NEJM National Correspondent @LisaRosenbaum17, a medical educator goes on the record with widespread but rarely publicly voiced concerns about the slippery slope from “wellness days” to inadequate medical training.
