Excited to officially announce “Buha’s Block,” my new video podcast covering all things Lakers.
The show is twice a week, with one episode featuring a guest and the other centered on the week’s biggest news/analysis.
All episodes will be on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.
LeBron on Shannon Sharpe: “I ride with Shannon 365 days — 366 on a leap year — 24/7. So that’s my guy. I always got his back. And he’s got mine. He can talk with the best of them, for sure.”
LeBron James on what he thought about Austin Reaves doing the “too small” gesture to Patrick Beverley: “That AR always got my back. Always. Even though he loved Kobe back in the day more than me. I forgive him.”
I asked LeBron for his early thoughts on the Memphis matchup. After listing out his scouting report for most of their rotation, he deadpanned, “Obviously, I haven’t thought about Memphis one minute.”
Mike Malone on Patrick Beverley’s flailing comments about Nikola Jokic: “I don’t listen to Patrick Beverley a whole lot. If Kawhi Leonard was talking, maybe I would listen to it. Kawhi’s a great player. ... They shot 26 free throws, we shot 10.”
REPORT: Rui Hachimura is expected to test free agency and there is reason to believe the Lakers will not want to pay the luxury tax required to match offers he receives (Jovan Buha).
Anthony Davis said he told Pau Gasol he wants his No. 3 retired by the Lakers one day to join the likes of Gasol and all of the other legendary Lakers big men.
After their last two signings (Rui Hachimura and Cam Reddish), the Lakers have enough room to bring both Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell back as well as sign two more veteran’s minimum free agents. They clearly need at least one more big.
Anthony Davis said Rui Hachimura has clips saved on his phone of Hachimura dunking on AD. Rui frequently shows it to Austin Reaves, who, along with AD, teases Hachimura about his dunking.
“It was an offensive foul,” Davis said. “He elbowed me in the face. They didn’t call it.”
Trevor Ariza (3-and-D), Wayne Ellington (elite 3-point shooter) and Dwight Howard (rim protector & rebounder) fill in nicely alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and Marc Gasol. Solid start for the Lakers in free agency.
The Lakers’ remade frontline of Anthony Davis, LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Mo Bamba and Wenyen Gabriel is long, athletic and versatile. Add in the 3PT shooting upgrade with Malik Beasley and D’Angelo Russell and the Lakers have a dramatically better roster.
LeBron James on how long he expects to continue playing in the NBA: “Not very long. … I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. But not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire. But I don’t have much time left.”
Anthony Davis said he and D’Angelo Russell were talking the entire game, analyzing their pick-and-roll chemistry and where each other likes the ball offensively. Davis added that he, Russell and LeBron James were drawing up plays at halftime and figuring out their three-man game.
Shannon Sharpe said something that got the whole Grizzlies bench to charge at him moments after intermission. Security had to step in. Sharpe just walked into the locker room tunnel with multiple security guards.
Darvin Ham on giving Rui Hachimura a DNP-CD a couple of weeks ago: “That was kinda on me. I went rogue on our rotation.”
Ham said he likes how Hachimura responded and the confidence and fearlessness he’s found since.
Pat Beverley started his postgame availabitly with a comment on Steph Curry’s injury: “First off, I wanna say prayer’s up to Steph, man. I heard he broke his hand today. Been my brother since college. So prayer’s up to him.”
LeBron James just said that if Bronny makes his USC debut on the same day the Lakers are playing, he’ll miss the Lakers game to attend Bronny’s game. He said he told his teammates on the flight over to OKC.
“Family over everything,” James said.
Anthony Davis said he and LeBron joke about Austin Reaves’ ability to get foul calls and draw free throws.
“Man, we wish we could get some of those,” Davis said.
The Lakers are staying overnight in Minneapolis instead of flying to Houston because of the ongoing blizzard warning. Here’s what the streets currently look like.
Anthony Davis was asked if he's ever seen a player that can turn it on like LeBron can.
Davis' answer: "Yeah, I know a player who can do that. You’re talking to him. (laughs)."
LeBron said two doctors recommended season-ending surgery, but then he went to see the “LeBron James of feet” and James determined he’d be able to return.
LeBron revealed that Rui Hachimura is the only teammate who tagged along with him this summer and that Hachimura "made a few trips" to travel with James on the road this offseason.
As Blake finished his warmup, Steve Ballmer was on the sideline watching and waiting. When Ballmer saw Griffin finish, he started walking towards him. Blake saw Ballmer and sped up, running away to the Pistons locker room as Ballmer yelled “Blake! Blake!” with his hand out.
Rob Pelinka says Rui Hachimura arriving in LA was a “personal renaissance” for Hachimura, who’s been working closely with and learning from LeBron.
“I think he’s just hitting the takeoff of the flight he’s about to go on,” Pelinka said.
“Bron calls him his understudy,” Darvin…
Darvin Ham on Steve Kerr’s comments on the Lakers flopping: “I just control what I can control, which is coaching my team. I don’t go down the rabbit hole of blaming officials.”
LeBron has recounted at least 10 different possessions from this game in detail during his postage press conference. His basketball memory remains remarkable.
LeBron James with a cryptic ending to his press conference: “I got a lot to think about. … Just personally, with me moving forward with the game of basketball, I got a lot to think about.”
Losing Alex Caruso is a tough blow for the Lakers’ defense. He’s one of the best defensive guards in the league, and was probably the second-most impactful defender on the No. 1 defense in the regular season. There’s no replacing him with what’s available to LA in free agency.
Darvin Ham said that a big chunk of his coaching meeting today was focused on the team’s rotation and figuring out better ways to maximize the bench units.
Darvin Ham says he’s been around greatness and other elite players, referencing Kobe Bryant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, but says that he’s never seen anyone at the level of LeBron James: “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The Lakers dramatically upgraded their 3-point shooting, maintained ballhandling/playmaking and added a rangy forward who will help defensively and on the glass. They did all that by including only one 1st, which they were able to protect (1-4). This trade is a win.
Lakers, Jazz and Timberwolves are finalizing trade sending D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt to Los Angeles, Russell Westbrook and first-round pick to Utah and Mike Conley Jr. and second-round pick compensation to Minnesota, sources tell

Darvin Ham on if he's considering going back to Jarred Vanderbilt in the Lakers' starting lineup: "Well, right now, I’ll consider getting me something to eat, a nice glass of wine and consider sleeping very soon here. Getting a good night’s sleep. No lineup questions, please."
