The nastiest thing happened
@RoyalOperaHouse
tonight during Alcina: a ~12yo boy was sweetly singing his lines when a man in the audience yelled “rubbish!” and booed him. Who would do that to a child? Once the boy was done, the audience responded with wild applause and cheering.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I would like to add you to my network.
Wishing all the best to our Malakai who this evening makes his debut as Oberta at the

“some AIs were found to be picking up on the text font that certain hospitals used to label the scans. As a result, fonts from hospitals with more serious caseloads became predictors of covid risk” 😬
I did something small (but big for me) today. I was nervous - not because the FT isn’t welcoming but because it feels almost like coming out again. I hope, immodestly, it might even make some space for others to see they can be themselves too.
The main reason we’ve moved from m to mn for “million” is because screen-readers for the visually impaired read out m as “metre” (so “3m people” would be “three metre people”)
Big moment for FT: after a million years using 'm' as a symbol for millions, we have decided to use 'mn'. Did our eagle-eyed readers notice, the bell wonders?! Keep consuming your

Since it's now been announced internally I can say I'm thrilled to start as acting associate editor

from Monday. It's such an important part of the FT's journalism and it's long been my ambition to work on it.
This urgency is why I’m posting this TODAY.
But also because Jimin’s art boosted our commitment to openly declare Bangtan Library a House of Queer, where we honor the BTS members’ devotion to human rights and equality 💜🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

Happy birthday to me! 37... Even in the past grim year I’ve managed to make (and keep) friends, learn things (🇩🇪), love, dance (on my own), do work I’m proud of, consume litres of ice cream... and survive, mind and body. Reasons to celebrate 🎂
In FT news, we're dropping honorifics from all our copy: on second mention, almost everyone is now just their surname. No more Mr/Mrs/Mx, Dr and all! (I saw The Times did this earlier this week, the winds of changes are blowing in the same direction.)
A lot of people are assuming this is about the Germans and not this: “The original broadcast also included a scene in which Major Gowen...uses very strong racist language in relation to an anecdote about the West Indies cricket team.” Read the story, not the headline!
Had lunch at the Science Museum earlier — on show are the syringe and vial with which Margaret Keenan became the first person outside of a trial to receive the BioNTech/Pfizer jab
I saw Cézanne at Tate Modern on Sunday and I already have a ticket to see it again. I almost cried in front of this late woodlandscape: practically abstract, all dissolves as he reaches reconciliation with what lies beyond sense and thought and life
Pesach is a festival of liberation, commemorating the Jews leaving Egypt, and the seder plate we have is full of symbolic foods. This year, we’ve added flour to make us think of Ukraine, today’s most urgent liberatory struggle
Russell Crowe, who is having an auction on the occasion of his divorce, has written for the FT about his films and the watches he associates with them, and he’s got a nice turn of phrase via

Steinway & Sons has unveiled a limited edition instrument to mark Beethoven’s 250th birthday year. Dubbed 'APPASSIONATA', the piano carries excerpts of Beethoven's Op 57 sonata across its case and lid. Ten of the handmade B-211 models are available worldwide

My only caveat, or rather practical step, is to make sure I have evening plans - see friends, go to the theatre/opera etc - because you can't be in museums all night.
