My first paper will be in AAAI this yr (@natashajaques) - we figured out how to get 1000s of satellites to play nicely with distributed optimization + RL, smashing baselines. People severely underestimate the maturity level of RL in 2024, and the impacts it will/is already having

Life seems like it would go so hard if you could simply fire anyone who provides you with an inconvenient answer to a question.

The totally groundless firing of Dr. Erika McEntarfer, my successor as Commissioner of Labor Statistics at BLS, sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the statistical mission of the Bureau. For a full statement opposing this move, read:

Ok but how does this fit into my worldview that I am an engineer and therefore intellectually superior by default.

Companies that hire consulting firms see large increases in labor productivity and also large increases of wages, with no decline in labor share or value added. It seems like a lot of the more nihilist theories of why companies hire consultants are not true on average!.

slop has gotten so prevalent that I’m walking on eggshells trying to write without LLMs. constantly asking myself “is this slop coded” “would an LLM use that em-dash”.

the crux is that for LLMs, simulation *is* their reality, while for robotics models there is inevitably a gap. For subtle reasons, Sergey argues that this gap may be insurmountable without real data. Needing an internet-scale robotics dataset would certainly lengthen timelines.

I wrote a fun little article about all the ways to dodge the need for real-world robot data. I think it has a cute title.

I have good reason to believe that somebody knew the copper tariffs were coming and traded the news ahead of time, and made an ungodly amount of profit. Trump announced his new 50% copper tariff at 12:58 PM yesterday. But as my charting shows, the price of copper began spiking

working in the aerospace industry, the most mind-boggling thing about the Waymo rollout is that it works at all from a regulatory perspective. at what point can you as a company "call it good" when the potential edge cases are infinite? not even a rhetorical question.

the primary nice thing about getting older is that you’re better at everything. raw g may be entering slow decline but you’re more socially competent, better at your work. underrated.
