Daniel Levy was chairman for 25 years of my life. He was, in a weird way, part of the family. We all know it was time to go, perhaps long overdue. But he's gone now, it's over. He deserves respect for what he's achieved. Don't be a classless prick about what he hasn't.

🧑🏠| NEW BLOG: Oil & gas jobs are disappearing. Clean energy jobs are growing. Workers need a real route between them. In this new blog, @joshemden outlines how the government can deliver a fair transition for workers. https://t.co/2goFwh68Om

Declining North Sea reserves and low international oil prices, not net zero policies, are largely responsible for current job losses in oil and gas, but th

Half of the increase in your energy bills is due to the cost of gas. Moving from fossil fuels to renewables is the simplest way to lower bills. 📻 @joshemden on @bbc5live 👇

Today’s industrial strategy made some clear strategic choices for the future direction of the UK economy. IPPR found that there are opportunities for the UK in three key clean technology industries, all of which are featured in the strategy 1/8

The UK Government has launched its new Industrial Strategy today. Very excited to see our @IPPR report ("The Heatwave") on heat pump manufacturing referenced in the official policy document! w/ @Narayanator & @joshemden

After 15 years of chop and change, today's industrial strategy is a real turning point for the UK economy. Business finally has the certainty it needs to invest — especially in the green industries of the future. 📻 #ICYMI: @RachaelAHenry on @LBC 👇

1/ Partnering with @changing_r /w support from @CPAGUK, our new report considers priorities for change for the upcoming child poverty strategy, informed by parents with experience on low incomes.

Any credible child poverty strategy must act directly to put more money into parents’ pockets. This starts with the removal of the two-child limit and bene

Say it with me: Gas. Sets. Electricity. Prices. If we achieved clean power by 2030 by tomorrow, everyone's bills would be immediately cheaper
FACTCHECK: UK Steel says high power prices for UK steel industry are "primarily" due to high wholesale prices UK Steel adds: 98% of the time, it’s GAS that sets UK wholesale price [cf 24% in DE & 7% in FR] It says policy costs [“net-zero”] are LOWER in UK than DE or FR 1/2

The Chancellor announced the government is creating a Construction Skills Mission Board This industry-wide body is a crucial step towards ensuring the construction workforce is ready to build 1.5 million homes and new infrastructure @IPPR recently recommended a similar approach
60,000 new brickies, engineers and sparkies to build the homes of the future. Security for working people and national renewal for our country. That is our mission - and we will deliver it.

...They are incredibly linked! National security and energy security go hand in hand and helping people get low-carbon tech is one of the best routes to energy security In short, not doing net zero makes the UK poorer and more exposed to Putin's war 7/7 https://t.co/xNfBGbhQcf

Cumulative savings of £70bn on the UK’s energy bill could have been made had investments happened over past decade.

This is what I think @TheNewsAgents should be drilling into Instead, sadly, most of the talking points either repeated the Sun's bilge or asked whether or not net zero will take a back seat because of a renewed focus on defence, as if they are totally separate issues... 6/7

So in actual fact, whether you think net zero is possible or not is sort of irrelevant. The key question is: In a fiscally constrained environment, how can government help people to afford technologies that we know are better and cheaper to run? 5/7 https://t.co/t0pvHfahxK

And it is also definitely a challenge for the government to reduce people's bills But low carbon technologies can help with this straight away. And yes, if you get a really well installed heat pump, they can help right away too https://t.co/mhTkhlcYLC 4/7

So while climate change may be the initial reason for buying them, these technologies are also just...much better But of course, it's absolutely true that the upfront cost of insulation, solar, heat pumps, EVs is often too expensive, particularly for low-income households 3/7

It is perfectly valid for @jonsopel and @lewis_goodall to discuss the costs of low carbon technologies. I would gently point out that satisfaction levels are very high for very many people who have well-installed (this is key) heat pumps... 2/7 https://t.co/othX7KRz1L.

Eighty-six per cent of households reported heat pumps have kept them warm during the UK’s bitter cold snap in a survey from Octopus Energy

I think @TheNewsAgents should also be correcting the record on this too Yesterday @jonsopel referenced the Sun's misreporting without any critique It's really important for media positioning itself as "sensible discussion" not to sanitise coordinated misinformation 1/7
Today's Times makes the Sun look even more dodgy: "the paper, dating from 2023, concluded that in the long run the economic consequences of net-zero were 'likely to be positive' & the negative impact could be mitigated by clear and consistent government policy"

Pleased @DrSimEvans dug into this "document" at the heart of the Sun's hyperventilating Feels appropriate for climate change deniers that they are trying to flood the zone with misinformation And be under no illusion. This is a coordinated tactic https://t.co/SiwDmMIRxR

The Sun hypes the report as a "bombshell leaked document" Ever-excitable hack Harry Cole calls it a "smoking gun" In reality, I'm told, it's just a summary of public material 🤔🤔 Source: "[It] is a summary of existing studies. It is not govt policy or research." 4/10

THREAD: How the Sun screwed up its "smoking gun" story on net-zero study The Sun: "As much as 10% wld be wiped off economic growth by end of decade" Source: "At no point does this study suggest there will be a drop in UK GDP. It talks abt a 10% transfer…within GDP" Oops! 1/10

Today we launch our report on the future of GB Energy A properly resourced GBE can capture the benefits of clean energy for the British people, driving us towards clean power, creating new jobs around the country and returning value to taxpayers https://t.co/rVcFswtq85

Achieving this requires bold, but focused, actions, without burdening GBE with conflicting objectives. In this report, we offer an implementation strategy
