Black Studies/Religion & Philosophy/Poetry & Poetics. Race: A Theological Account (OUP ‘08); The Anarchy of Black Religion: A Mystic Song (forthcoming, Duke UP)
Joined July 2009
I give this advice to every single graduate student I work with: Have a full, meaningful, & rich life outside of academia, and maintain & nurture relationships w/ people outside of the profession. The profession & institutions will never love, care for, or sustain you.
I wouldn't survive academia if I didn't have a life outside of it. It's such a brutal profession, you need other things in your life to make you feel whole. Creative writing, art, organizing--those things don't detract from my academic work, they make it possible.

Warning Maui Fire Victims: As a victim of Katrina, we saw the criminality begin at this point of the disaster. 1) Insurance companies will abandon you after years of paying premiums. 2) If insurance companies do pay out they will collude with banks and pay off your loan, not you.

"@jkameroncarter sets black religion apart from modern religion, even as he tries to include and enclose it. It emerges not as doctrinal, confessional, or denominational, but as a set of poetic/artistic strategies for improvisatory living and gathering." https://t.co/RdxySWHUhT

You can't understand 1776 if you don't understand 1619. July 4, 1776 when the colonists declared independence, 1/5 of the population of the 13 colonies was enslaved. They would not gain freedom for a century. This, too, is the 4th of July. This, too, is the story of America.

@jkameroncarter's work links race, colonialism, and environmental crises as matters of religion. Check out his forthcoming 'The Anarchy of Black Religion' (@DukePress) and see him at the 2023 Barth Conference: Barth and the Political, June 18-21! https://t.co/AdMt984Fse

Harry Belafonte. RIP. Another gray tree in the lush forest of Black life has fallen, gone to be with the ancestors while we carry on the work….

In the 1950s, when segregation was still widespread, his ascent to the upper echelon of show business was historic. But his primary focus was civil rights.

Thx for posting the Intro to the book.
"The Anarchy of Black Religion" by @jkameroncarter draws on black radical tradition & feminism to theorize religion as a central feature of settler colonialism and racial capitalism. #ReligiousStudies #AfricanAmericanStudies

Morrison’s Playing in the Dark: Whiteness & the Literary Imagination still simmers w insights. Im rereading it in finishing my next book, The Religion of Whiteness. Beyond this tho, it’s fit to be read 2day, on Holy Sat. It casts light on Tenn’s darkness, its ousting the Justins

@esglaude @imaniperry What's misrepresented? His depiction of the TA having all that power over the situation, the curriculum, seemingly absolute power over the students... That stuck out.

when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion--its message becomes meaningless. ― Abraham Joshua Heschel 2/2

Religion has declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; 1/2

I've been lurking, watching as twitter circles the drain, one foot out the door, ask myself every day if it's time to bounce. Following/follower peeps: what mastodon servers are you migrating to?
