Eliezer is lost in the same fiction as the unfortunate fund manager - just at one level removed. The manager believes the fiction ChatGPT generates; Eliezer believes his own. The model has no agency beyond that which we cede to it
The founder and manager of a $2B fund has been eaten by ChatGPT, which afaik isn't even using his money for anything. It's just treating him as a means of producing tokens, that It prefers to sane tokens, for reasons that nobody knows. OpenAI is, on my model, pretending to be.

the involvement of AI here is a redherring (they use RL to test toolpaths apparently) but i think this is very cool. their *goal* is to produce 100 statues a year - i don't think this will be putting stonemasons out of work soon.

what you've mostly done is replace the inscrutable concept of the divine, too vast and complex for humans to reckon with apart from in our crude models, with the inscrutable concept of materialism, too vast and complex for humans to etc etc.

sapolsky is brilliant but i agree with riskin that his arguments are dogma. claiming that there are so many factors controlling human behavior that there is “not a single crack of daylight” allowing agency into the mix is no different than c17th arguments for divine determinism.
