I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… 999 call handlers are the most under-appreciated and underpaid group in the emergency services. I had to call 999 recently while off duty for an OOHCA and the handler was amazing. Nothing but respect for them and the job they do 🫡 🚑

Ambulance services should be checking their staffs welfare following major trauma calls. This should not need to be suggested in 2022. Staff welfare continues to be neglected despite the overwhelming evidence of the significant detrimental impact to ambulance staff

I wonder when someone in one of the U.K.’s ambulance services will be courageous enough to ACTUALLY prioritise staff welfare. At the moment it’s nothing more than a sound bite given to the media and added to emails. It’s hard to see staff absence improving until this happens

12hr shift turned into a 14hr shift due to ambulance queues at hospital (2-3 hour wait). Now for the 40 mile drive back to station, making at a 15hr shift 😴. Starting to think there maybe a welfare issue here somewhere 🤔. Or am I just another whiny paramedic?

As a mentor I often don’t intervene when a student/staff member is making a mistake - only if it’s detrimental, dangerous or inappropriate. We need to normalise mistakes and stop ridiculing. Instead ambulance services need to create a just culture through reflection and learning

I’m seeing sick more patients who delayed calling an ambulance and tell me ‘I didn’t want to bother anyone. I know how busy you are at the moment’. This really concerns me. Do not hesitate to call 999 if you feel it’s an emergency. What you see in the media is not your fault

I remember experiencing, and witnessing, some bullying when I first joined the ambulance service. Sadly it still seems to be prevalent. Like a bad stain within the NHS. Referred to as ‘mild’ bullying, which is apparently acceptable or even required!

I can’t help but feel there continues to be a massive stigma surrounding MH in ambulances services. Burnout is a huge issue at the moment, but one which is being greeted with a roll of the eyes and a ‘well, just book of sick’. Where/who are you suppose to turn to these days?
