No. 8 - There are what, some 2000 other shows going on? Just try to do the best show you can. Some of my best shows have been to smaller audiences.

No. 7 - …I get asked a lot of about audience numbers. Another comedian told me that the average audience at the Edinburgh Fringe is 7 people. Not sure this is true but be prepared to not have people at your show. Don’t tie it to your self-worth though!.

No. 6 - …You still have to promote these yourself too. These other festivals do help with promotion but don’t go into them expecting a sell out, unless you are prepared to flyer (will do a tweet about flyering). Speaking of which, audiences….

The ones I’ve done that were welcoming for un-signed/low follower count comedians were: Brighton Fringe, Cheltenham Fringe, Chichester Fringe and the Tunbridge Wells Fringe Festival. I have also heard good things about the Buxton Fringe festival and Watford Fringe Festival….

No. 5 - Speaking of other Fringe Festivals. There are quite a few other ones around the country to preview your show at. The Brighton Fringe is probably the best known one, especially if you’re not an unsigned/unknown act. These festivals are listed on Eventotron/have websites.

… However new venues appear closer to Fringe time. I’ve seen people accept spaces in July. If you’re like me and want your venue to be confirmed in January then think really hard about this. Especially if you have no profile like I do.

No. 4 - Free Fringe, now I’ve never been accepted to either Laughing Horse or PBH…the reason being I’ve always applied to the best venues they have. It’s a competition for spaces, but if price is your thing look to apply.

…Not any other costs as associated with going up or making a show. With that in my mind, really think hard as if you really want to do the fringe. There will chepaer venues than mine. There will be more expensive ones. However there is the free fringe.

No. 3 - Cost of Ed-fringe venue. Now this is a bit taboo for some reason. No one likes talking about money I have found. My venue, that I really like, cost £2750. This is why people say working class comedians are priced out of comedy. As this was just for my venue.

No.2 Continued: This is just a website to upload your show info and photos etc. These are where your Assembly, Underbelly and Gilded Balloon will be etc. Some re-direct you to there own websites where you fill in a google form.

No. 2 - Applying for Ed-Fringe venues is basically, well, if you went to University, think of it like UCAS. Luckily now most fringe festivals…and the Edinburgh Fringe, use the website ‘Eventotron’ for you to apply to.

No. 1) Continued: I then emailed said venues. Sounds so easy eh? Of course some of them were dismissive, most gave no response, but some were actually really helpful. If it takes ages for you craft a good email, don’t worry, a lot of the email responses are surprisingly informal.

No.1 - Finding an Ed-fringe venue. Well what I did was go to the Ed-Fringe for a week (altho its maybe too expensive to do that now, perhaps now it would be a weekend), checked out the shows that seemed interesting to me and wrote down the venues I liked.

A lot of people ask me what it’s like, so I’ll be tweeting daily with my thoughts, experiences and recommendations, kind of in a Gary Gulman style way. I’ve been doing comedy for nearly six and a half years, so here goes.

Hello, I’m back on Twitter to promote my third Edinburgh Fringe show. I don’t have PR, a producer or a big social media following, so I thought I’d share what it’s like doing the Fringe and stand-up as an unsigned act.
