I'm basically waving and saying "hey I'm on instagram". None of them are good but I guess here seems worse AND has been giving less and less back so doesn't feel worthwhile or moral where the others are immoral but worthwhile and I'm a hypocritical sellout 🤷‍♀️.

I'm not deleting the account because who knows maybe here will get better or bought out and a mailing list of 49000 is hard to walk away from but also, it's not like the moral choice between Musk and Zuck is vast so I feel like deleting in protest is weird when.

I let that joke sit - it’s poking at institutions that excused atrocities so I’m cool with it. But then it pivots quickly to a self-deprecating poke at my own country. The quick move of targets keeps it light - it shows nothing personal. My job is mockery and anything is game.

Now I know the crowd want things soft I can play up the “yay” moment and give us panto - it goes down well. The soft joy of that makes the gold reference feel darker.

Note the reaction from the crowd is a mix of filthy laughing at the edgier suggestion and a bit of a “oh that’s mean laugh” - it takes the temperature of the room and gives me things I can feed back to the comedians doing sets to let them plan their course of action.

It’s a shame the camera is at the back for when he says “wife” but I think you can see from the tilting the mugging I am doing to get the crowd onto the same page as my thinking. And AGAIN - take it away and invent my own reality.

Each tiny snippet of information, even if the information is a pause, gives me a chance to play - name, pause, wife etc… the truth doesn’t matter. In this case Pascal is a catalyst for me to invent on the spot with his answers being largely irrelevant compared to my whims.

This is the very top of the show - we’re just getting to know the room. MCs ask a lot of general questions “who is in from overseas” etc so that if comedians have bits that reference things like this we’ve already done the legwork of checking the room for callback opportunities.

This video I think shows my speed of thinking, a bit of my politics and my style: friendly, lively, non combative. The hope being this gets you to follow and eventually to come and see me live etc etc.

We can give away the odd sample, or a demo, but the best way to preserve our product is to give away a sense of the vibe and then hope you like it enough to want to buy the product ie come see us on tour.

So we simply HAVE to put clips, jokes and STUFF out. The simplest explanation for why most comedians are putting out pieces to camera or crowd work is that this is marketing and the stand up is the product.

It used to be that being on TV found you a following, now TV wants you to bring your following to their show.

Why are they so everywhere? Well, because the industry has changed to make a social media presence the single biggest factor in your ability to be successful.
