A question I get persistently is, "I can't afford any more subscriptions, but I'd love to read that article. Why can't I pay a dime for a single copy? It makes so much SENSE!" Josh Benton of @NiemanLab here explains micropayments and their discontents. https://t.co/cGrBEl7ady

After all, who would news companies rather trust their revenue to than the guy who calls them a "relentless hatestream"?

Can you imagine what it could have been? @JohnJHarwood
New York Times editorial board has compiled "a list of 12 markers of democratic erosion." https://t.co/sZP92t52P7 This is what "not the odds, but the stakes" was all about. During the 2024 campaign, those 12 markers could have been operating to guide news coverage everywhere.

Many of you receive a lot of national news, but care more about local. (You also hate paywalls.) If that's you read this detailed story. "The Salt Lake Tribune, preparing to drop its paywall, launches a free, monthly print newspaper for Southern Utah." https://t.co/aoQpGVMYAM

I have a lurid fascination with trainwreck interviews. One of the best I have read was recently published by the New Yorker. "Why Biden’s White House Press Secretary Is Leaving the Democratic Party." Karine Jean-Pierre interviewed by Isaac Chotiner

Karine Jean-Pierre feels that Democrats were so mean to Biden that she is becoming an Independent.

It's not just the newspapers. "While declines to print readership are almost a foregone conclusion, 'digital traffic to local news sites is experiencing a cratering similar to that of print,' State of Local News Project director Zach Metzger writes in the report.

Columbia Journalism Review has a new editor-in-chief, Betsy Morais. https://t.co/5BE9MZgtYm About the current moment she writes: "Most journalists can relate to the feeling of forces closing in." I know I can. Read her list, and tell me how it matches yours.

Miss it this week? I have a new job: president of News Creator Corps. Goes like this: Via the people now called creators, audiences are migrating to the social layer in the internet stack. Maybe there's a way to move with, rather than against that. https://t.co/XPytd3eqLd

In June I announced that I was retiring from NYU after 39 years, but not leaving the field, or the fight for a public service press. Today I can explain what I meant by not leaving the field. I have a new job: president of News Creator Corps. Read on.

My hot take. Media companies learned they can't rely on the platforms to deliver an audience. That's why there's so much emphasis on newsletter subscribers. They restore a direct relationship with readers. Cuomo relied on the usual platforms. Mamdani had 50,000 volunteers.

Thanks to @jayrosen_nyu for introducing these very useful terms and concepts: "The view from nowhere” and the “savvy style” in political journalism both spread in this fashion, as did this mantra during the 2024 campaign: “Not the odds, but the stakes.”
