.@Rebuild_News released a plan to create a $125 million per year fund, financed in part by making sure that Meta and Amazon help out (not just Google). Already endorsed by California broadcasters, indy papers, public media and others.

A labor leader and an industry leader. We all need to come together for the common cause of reviving local news.
Big news: We're thrilled to welcome industry powerhouses Susan Patterson Plank and @mattdpearce to our senior team. They’ll help turn growing momentum for local news legislation into meaningful support for newsrooms and communities nationwide. Learn more:

They propose that if Meta and Amazon dont contribute, the state should levy a fee. That would increase the size of the fund so it could include broadcasters (including public TV and radio) and actually help address the massive local news crisis hitting CA communities.
Latest: Senior Policy Advisor @mattdpearce and former CA Sen. @Steve_Glazer urge lawmakers to enshrine a law requiring tech platforms to fund community reporting, make state support permanent, and ensure fair distribution to local newsrooms. Read more:

"Meta, X, and other dominant social media platforms should require user verification of any account before allowing it to be amplified by its algorithms.".
America’s digital borders are wide open. And it’s Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk’s fault. "We need social media sovereignty and transparency," writes @roytemple, "which requires user verification on social media and disclosure of non-human posters.".

So thrilling! Of course @Report4America's reputation was built by the 658 journalists who have served in 371 newsrooms (for profit and nonprofit, rural and urban, teeny tiny and grand). Corps members & newsrooms – YOU did this through your commitment to serving your communities.
🎉 Today, we’re thrilled to announce a major multi-year gift from @KnightFdn! This $20 million investment will provide career-making opportunities for the next generation of journalists, help transform local newsroom financial sustainability and shape the future of local news.

The wrong way to interpret this is, "the rubes voted for Trump because they're uninformed." Rather, they are victims because of all the consequences of life in a news desert: more corruption, higher taxes, lower bond ratings, greater social alienation and rising misinformation.
The presidential election's popular vote was close nationwide and a landslide in news deserts. What does this correlation mean? Our report, by @farhip and @volk_maps.
