We know the AI community is approaching potential risks from all angles. In a rapidly evolving landscape, we must find common ground on what it means to be a cautious actor while considering diverse perspectives, including those of affected communities.

So here’s my complaint: @WalmartCanada appears to be targeting the elderly to sign them up for credit cards with little to no informed consent. This is morally reprehensible, and should probably be investigated by @OttawaPolice and @CBCOttawa for its legality. /5

I intervened with the customer service representative, who tried to shut me up. I explained that there was NO way the customer was clearly aware of the fact that she was being signed up for a credit card. I was told I could contact the manager to lodge a complaint. /4

The customer leaned in and indicated she couldn’t hear the cashier. The cashier then told the customer it would only take five minutes and she could save $20 on her purchase. She then asked for the customer’s ID. The customer, clearly confused, gave her her ID. /3

The customer was asked if she wanted to save $20 on her purchase by signing up for a @MastercardCA. The customer clearly couldn’t hear what the cashier was saying. The cashier then explained “you can save $20 on your purchase, and $25 on your next purchase”. /2

Witnessed what seemed an extremely PREDATORY behaviour at the @BayshoreOttawa @WalmartCanada today when a cashier signed an elderly (75+) customer up for a credit card with basically zero informed consent AND after the customer declined a first time. /1
