🍀 time! In this new pre-print we used ultra-strong gradient dMRI to investigate the neurite and soma development of the hippocampus in childhood and adolescence. "The developing hippocampus: Microstructural evolution through childhood and adolescence":
Tweet card summary image

The hippocampus is a structure in the medial temporal lobe which serves multiple cognitive functions. While important, the development of the hippocampus in the formative period of childhood and...

The methods used were developed using an open framework that we anticipate will be helpful for further improvements in both the accuracy and reliability of computed subcortical connectomes. 6/7

Not only could we identify most known subcortical connections, but we could also identify them reliably by applying our methods to both the test-retest and unrelated subsets of HCP. 5/7

Using probabilistic tractography together with subcortical ROIs, we were able to successfully recapitulate most of the known connections of the human subcortex. e.g. the ansa lenticularis connecting the GPi and VLp. 4/7

Investigations of this circuit in vivo have so far been limited due to the difficulty of performing tractography in this complex and compact region... providing motivation for us to assess this possibility by leveraging data from the Human Connectome Project (HCP). 3/7

Classic studies have identified an intrinsic circuit involving connections between key nodes of the subcortex. See this schematic and article by Delong et al. for a great review. https://t.co/2MyLwYpUkT 2/7
