I moved from central Illinois to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 2018 & still get so excited about eating Maryland crabs. Nothing like eating something delicious, thats also culturally & historically significant to the place you live. I also love food you have to work at to eat.

Amazing that a lot of the knee-jerk response to this are that acknowledging links to the Confederacy is nit-picky. Georgia’s state flag is the literal Confederate flag. Arkansasβ€˜s flag holds the Confederacy at a higher honor than the US & the design was put in place by a Klansman.

Not every flag with similarities to the Confederate battle flag has a definitive historical connection to secession or slavery. But seven state flags, including Maryland’s, have documented links to the Confederacy and white supremacy.

At the end of April I was the visiting artist for a week at @uarkart, hosted by their Photo and Printmaking departments. It was an honor. We started the process of a series of prints I designed that are about the Arkansas state flag’s overt white supremacists design and concept.

I hope:. β€’Georgia stops using the literal Confederate flag as its flag. β€’Arkansas changes the meaning of the most prominently placed star on its flag, that represents the Confederacy & was put there by a state rep Klansmen during the height of the KKK’s political power in AR.

Mississippi became the last state to remove the Confederate battle flag from its state flag in 2020. But seven state flags still have design links to the Confederacy.

Was interviewed in the Washington Post, talking about my work on state flags that still honor the confederacy. Probably most egregiously, Arkansas & Georgia.

Montana & Tennessee today, or even back when John C Calhoun told John Quincy Adams that if there wasn’t slavery in Missouri the South would rejoin Britain…. Constitution, Democracy, β€œAmerica” are totally up for sacrifice if they might help or give power to marginalized people.

Much like what happened in Tennessee earlier this month, this is not only censorship of an elected official but disenfranchisement of the people they represent. It's an effort to overturn the will of the people by attacking the very nature of representative government.

The replies to this tweet, justifying this door, are disheartening. This flag was a Confederate flag & then rarely seen until the 20th century, as symbol of white pride & power, & as a response to civil rights & integration. You can’t un-ring that bell & you shouldn’t want took

Trump got his largest number of votes in 2020 from California. 155 million Americans voted & Biden won by 7 million. If Republican politics, policies & candidates can close that gap in the popular vote, that mean most Americans don’t want them in the White House. #Democracy.

8. The House wants Minnesota to hand our presidential electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote. No one seems to care that future presidential elections will be decided completely by large cities on the coasts like New York and Los Angeles.

My sincerest apologies to the people of Arkansas, and the people of Alaska, referring to Arkansas in this thread as AK and not AR. I’m very embarrassed.πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ.

It’s unbelievable that Georgia’s state flag is literally the Confederate States of America’s flag. AND! that this became the flag only 20 years ago. But also, Arkansas’s flag overtly honors the Confederacy & it (the current flag in 2023) was designed by the KKK.

The wonderful faculty, undergrads & grad students in @uarkart’s Print & Photo departments are finishing up the print. I’m just very honored my artwork is helping shine a light on this history that most people in Arkansas (let alone the nation) don’t know about.

This is what Bohlinger had to say about honoring the Confederacy along with (& symbolically more than) France, Spain & the United States. And this white suprematist, KKK designed, Confederate flag is still Arkansas’s state flag.

The very next year, led again by Bohlinger, the state legislature redesigned the flag (that at this point had 2 blue starts above the word ARKANSAS & 2 blow) to have 3 of the 4 stars under ARKANSAS & the star representing the Confederacy prominently alone above the state’s name.

Originally AK’s flag had 3 blue stars. Representing the US, Spain & France. Nations that AK was a territory of. But in 1923, during the KKK’s political height in Arkansas, a 4th was added to represent the Confederacy. This was led by state congressman Neill Bohlinger, a Klansman

At 1st I was planning on focusing on Georgia’s flag. You can see why here, in my mock up for a print about it. But the more I learned about Arkansas’s literal KKK designed flag, & because we were in Arkansas, I focused on AK’s flag.
