In Parliament today so young refugees failed by fast track can be heard.
Mind blowing that on the same day, new laws are trying to be rushed through.
New laws that could catch refugees who have been through a broken system that fails to recognise their protection claims.

One of the questions I get asked most often is why are refugees in detention, especially in hotels.
The answer is simple.
The

OVERJOYED that all remaining refugees in detention at Park Hotel (+ others) finally have their freedom after 9 years.
BUT some still remain locked up for no reason.
We MUST celebrate those released but not forget & keep fighting for freedom for those left behind.
2 years ago the Medevac law was repealed by
@ScottMorrisonMP
.
A law that meant sick refugees could get urgent medical attention they needed, & recommended by medical professionals.
It’s to our great shame the law was repealed and 75 refugees still remain trapped in detention.
Sickening to hear
@AlexHawkeMP
misleading the public on the character test bill.
The Govt can’t even provide a single example where they have wanted to cancel a visa but don’t have the power.
Plain and simple this bill is about fear, politics and discrimination.
#AusPol2022
“Peter Dutton said I would never set a foot in Australia. Politicians didn’t say my name. But I exist and I am here. I am here to support the 31,000 people in the community. To support the evacuation to safety bill”

Let’s rejoice BUT please don’t forget the 10 or so still trapped in detention. Also transferred for medical treatment from Manus/Nauru. The Govt intentionally moved them from inner city hotels to detention in suburbs, in the hope of out of mind & sight.
The cruelty isn’t over.
I can’t explain how momentous it was to see the crossbench use their “matter of public importance” to call for and end to arbitrary and indefinite detention - on and offshore.
Giving a voice and humanity to

The treatment of the men detained at Mantra sums up the sheer cruelty of this Govt - telling the men they will be moved but with no information.
Shocking treatment of fellow human beings on top of locking them up for over 7 years.

Spot the difference. Arrived in Australia seeking asylum - was sent to detention offshore living hell for 6 years. Arrived in Switzerland - is offered permanent protection months later.
Detained on Manus Island for six years, this refugee has been granted asylum in Switzerland. His human rights work brought global attention to those in detention and he's urging others to maintain hope.
I know it's 4pm on a Friday and a week before Christmas, but the enormity of this can't be underestimated.
The AAT was politicised, unjust, rigged and stacked against people seeking asylum and refugees.
Good riddance. Great decision

Just imagine if the 150 a year since 2013 had been taken up. Instead we have seen 12 deaths, women sexually assaulted and kids in a catatonic state. That’s what happens when you play politics with people’s lives.
