I’m proud of this student and ashamed of the institution with which I am affiliated. What else do we teach them if not to principled? If not to speak against evil? This is the humane part of the humanities. Give this kid his diploma!

This is why NYU is denying him a diploma: “The genocide currently occurring is supported politically and militarily by the United States, is paid for by our tax dollars, and has been livestreamed to our phones for the past 18 months.” https://t.co/iRnfJmLlx6

An important component of this song is that Fiona Apple spent years as part of a community group just watching what judges, prosecutors, and police do in court. My mother also did this when she retired. It's an incredible service to the possibility of a democratic society.

Wrote about the modest optimistic practices of writing, reading, showing up, and standing with during these dark times for @thewritingcolab's 100 Days of Creative Resistance (while also slipping in some lines from Nazim Hikmet, Lydia Davis, and coworkers).

We'll be discussing the approaches of such greats as Lydia Davis and Samuel R. Delany, and looking under the hood of Gordon Lish's storied/infamous edit of Raymond Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" and the Lishian method more generally. Then we'll apply it!

Hardly on here anymore, but just to say: I'm delighted to be teaching an in-person writing workshop at @Center4Fiction in late April. The topic is one that's near and dear to me: getting unstuck by editing yourself and generating work from life.
