I took a delightful detour through the CCNY Archives on my way to lunch today.
It's #QuantumYear2025. Which had us wondering: Q: When did we first have a formal Quantum Mechanics class at CCNY? A: 1957! That's more than 50 years after Planck's Lectures and Einstein's photoelectric effect work! Thanks to Archives @CCNYLibraries for helping with the search.

So, 👋reporters, when you show a picture of Shepard Hall and say CUNY, it’s kinda wrong. Yes, it’s a CUNY, but it’s not the CUNY. There is no single CUNY (To take a picture of the CUNY, you would need to go some office building on East 42nd Street.)

City College is the oldest of the institutions under the CUNY umbrella. It started as the Free Academy in 1847 and was later renamed College of the City of New York. In 1961, CUNY was formed, joining CCNY with other municipal schools in the city, like Baruch, Hunter, and others.

CCNY stands for The City College of New York. It is one college (or campus) within the larger University structure of CUNY, the City University of New York. The are 24 other CUNY colleges in all 5 NYC boroughs, making 25 CUNY schools, but only 1 City College of New York.

We've been reeling since last week's events. It’s a tangled mess. But, one frustration I have, and one that we likely all share, is the confusion between the two acronyms: CCNY and CUNY. Even native New Yorkers often mix them up, as does the national press. Let’s resolve that! 🧵

Dear @LearningAtoZ, Use better fonts. You don't need to be artistic, just be readable for a 5 year old. Comic Sans would be absolutely fine here. Those a's are nearly indistinguishable from o's. And get your facts straight. That's not a man. That's a dog!
