Finally watched Adolescence. The world’s given its take and here’s my microscopic contribution: the school in episode 2 is entirely plausible. Writing its depiction off as an ‘insult’ to teachers is tribal. I’ve seen many schools with this decaying level of culture. What

Alignment would multiply the effectiveness of staff. I think it needs courageous leadership willing to hold all teachers to account.

Powerful point. Encourages me to think "whole-school".

One of the biggest barriers to the “aligned” school, where routines and techniques are made consistent across all classrooms is that the people who are most against it have simply never seen it before, and thus don’t understand how much better it will make their lives.

In 2013, I wrote a book about educational myths. I *didn't* include learning styles. Why? Because even in 2013, so much research had already been published showing they were bunk. Didn't feel worth me going over it all again. It's now 2024. What's in @TheEconomist ?

I wrote about more here. With some ideas to practise 'your phone is a tool'.

I have been running a meeting when a senior manager got out their phone when I was talking. I've started using pen and paper in meetings.

Recently I was at a school where the first thing I noticed was how many of the the adults had their phones out. In meetings. In PD. In the classroom. All day. Everywhere I went. I had this feeling that no one was really paying attention. And i don't mean the kids.

Just finished 'Running the Room' by @tombennett71 . Practical and thought-provoking. I feel validated and left with openings for action. Keep on learning...

It could be, and bear with me here, it could just be that the people who insist students are polite and respectful are themselves polite and respectful, and the people who have a problem with the same insistence might - just might - be impolite and disrespectful.

It's interesting to see people who have never successfully run a challenging classroom or school, get so upset by teachers and leaders who actually do so by using processes that are sensible, effective and fair. It's like watching fish argue about ballet dancing.

Every school should ban phones for kids, as a default. They are designed to be attention hoovers. They have a huge impact on behaviour and learning.

Arguments as to why phones are good for learning and should be used by teachers in lessons are falling away. That's good. Now's the time for arguments and about how terrible they are for children. A consensus schools should be phone free would be so helpful to so many kids.

As a teacher there's never enough time to do my job. Accepting this fact gives me a bit of room to remember: "I choose what I give my attention to" In that bit of room I can brighten the day by: _giving a compliment _finishing a booklet _listening to a colleague/ pupil

Three habits that helped me improve the skill of choosing where I give my attention: 1_sorting out my eating and sleeping, 2_meditating, and 3_reading for more than 10m at a time.

Is it unrealistic to expect young people to do this? It most definitely is - if as teachers we don't: 1_work on it ourselves in our lives, and 2_teach them how to do it

Choosing what I give my attention to - is up to me. Thankfully, it's a skill that can be developed. And it's something that I know needs practising.🧵
