1/7 🧵Excited to share my first pre-print manuscript from @Sutherland_Lab with @burr_marian resolving the controversial SCLC-Y subtype! Our findings suggest YAP1 is not a subtype defining transcription factor in SCLC. @WEHI_research @JCSMR

Third time lucky! For 2 days, @WEHI_research students were able to put down their pipettes and enjoy some time away from the lab. Organising the annual retreat has been a challenge, but seeing everyone smiling, making new friends, and having a dance will be a highlight of 2022.

Great work @Maggie_A_Potts! Beautiful talk that shows the true power of CRISPR screens 🧬
It’s impressive to hear presentations from senior researchers, but I’m always most inspired to see the work of rising stars ECRs like @Maggie_A_Potts in lab of @MarcoHerold_J @wehi @mscienceaustnz @10xgenomics

Thank you to all the facilitators, all GRs, @WEHI_research and @UniMelb whom without them, this workshop wouldn’t have been possible.

It has been a fantastic experience to be a member on the organising committee; to see this workshop come into fruition was truly spectacular. I have learnt a lot about myself and my place inside (and outside) the lab, as well as the leader I aspire to be.

Mel was able to help redefine the notion of conflict into a potential for growth. Through a lens of psychological safety and attentiveness, we can navigate tough conversations to lead teams to adapt and thrive.

The final day was on People Management, where @SouthViewCoach enabled a thought-provoking discussion around the idea of being in a “team”, enabling growth through establishing trust and safety, and what happens when conflict arises.

These tools are powerful, as they go beyond the lab setting and can be scaled accordingly from a team of 2 to teams of 200 (and above!)

Day 2 was centred around Strategic Planning with Jacqui Jordan. She provided us with straightforward and effective tools such as the AdcB bluesheet and PESTLE analysis to effectively communicate ideas and carry out plans to teams we are a part of.

A key take away for me was understanding the ever evolving nature of leadership, and how important it is to know your strengths and values, to aid in becoming the leader you want to be.

Day 1 began with a discussion on knowing yourself as a leader. @DrRowanBrookes led the day by unpacking leadership styles and origin stories.

Last week I had the opportunity to help run a “Beginners Guide to Leadership” workshop, targeted towards graduate research students across The University of Melbourne. The workshop was designed to ignite conversations around leadership and allow GRs to upskill in this area.

Wow - cancer patients who took certain anti-histamine medications because of allergies responded better to immunotherapy. Turns out histamine binds to macrophage receptors, makes macrophages immunosuppressive, thus inducing T cell dysfunction https://t.co/x0dJJqhv3w
