And now we have a system that rewards throughput over progress. Part 3 in a 4-part series on rebuilding the architecture of science is now available. https://t.co/10nCtkoSHM

We’ve built markets for just about everything except science. There enormous friction for everything scientific progress needs transacted - money, ideas, collaborations, supplies, communicating progress, and most importantly, learning from itself.

Exposomics is a natural evolution of genomics & can help illuminate the "dark matter" of human disease. Many features also make it commercially interesting. (1) it's different for everyone and changes unpredictably (reason to keep getting tested) (2) can identify an entirely

DARPA’s magic isn't money - it's the program managers. What if AI could play that role for science, on a much bigger scale? Second installment of a 4-part series on rebuilding the architecture of science: The AI Program Manager https://t.co/1K4NHDtR0b

Haven't read this yet but will repost b/c this is a conversation that needs to be happening more. Thanks to @innovationwonk for jumping in. The Vannevar Bush-era system for funding and conducting science is getting replaced -- what shall we replace it with? Please discuss.
Science built the modern world. But the world of science needs rebuilding. I’ve launched a new Substack exploring how we can redesign the machinery of science to be faster, fairer, and more intelligent. We're opening with a 4-part opening series: 🧠 Rebuilding the Architecture

The next parts drop next week. Let’s start the conversation about what it will take to rebuild the operating system of science.

The first piece is out now. It’s about why our current system can’t meet the challenges ahead, and what a new architecture for science could look like. https://t.co/aZtr1y4QxT

Ideas matter. Write them down. Around a month ago, @calebwatney sent me a @statnews piece from @Finrow & @innovationwonk & something clicked. I had co-started the Clinical Trial Abundance initiative a few months prior, but the problem seemed intractable.
The FDA is sitting on a goldmine of drug development data — 10,000+ page dossiers detailing how drugs are designed, made, tested, and approved. Big Pharma has these in-house. Startups? Locked out. It’s time to fix that. Read my proposal for @IFP on how. https://t.co/rPrLuG7tHz

FDA has one such huge data repository, currently locked away and sitting idle. Perhaps easily unlockable albeit with some agency creativity—idea #4 in this piece by me and @innovationwonk in @statnews last week: https://t.co/Sy4cThk7Bz
Concur. We habitually undersample (yes a part is driven by historical data acquisition challenges but those are mostly obsolete now). We also don’t SHARE data - yes I welcome people yelling at me “but we do” <- we don’t and everyone knows it! We need giant repositories of all

Good or bad, when institutions are remade it's an opportunity for fresh new ideas to root. There's plenty of negative criticism out there—from all sides—but @innovationwonk and I jotted down some constructive ideas to throw into the mix—published here in @statnews

China is outpacing the U.S. in biotech drug approvals, and experts warn that in a race where speed matters, America is stuck in the slow lane — held back by regulatory and operational drag.

“There's no reason the U.S. can't pick up the pace to match the global clinical research front-runners without compromising safety,” write Brian Finrow and Sandeep Patel.

I had a lot of fun talking to @rSanti97 about my time building and leading BARDA DRIVe
BARDA has been called "pound for pound the most effective federal agency" in the response to COVID. Almost no one has heard of it. New Statecraft with @innovationwonk, on running a VC shop in the federal government.

Watching people you love die waiting for an organ transplant is awful. Knowing that most of this death is unnecessary is even worse. Republicans and Democrats in Congress agree - we need to break up the national organ monopoly. https://t.co/QWskvI9cLL

More than 100,000 Americans are on the waitlist for an organ transplant. Over 30 of them die every day. Most of this death is unnecessary.
