We also discussed possible collaborations with the CILIP Metadata and Discovery Group. Thanks to the SI and CILIP members who attended for such a stimulating and expansive discussion.

Several members present were both LIPs and indexers and shared the affinities they found between these areas of work, and how they can work together symbiotically.

Cataloguing, classification and indexing draw on common skills and expertise, but the outcomes can be very different in form.

LIPs often work directly with their customers; we usually never meet the people who use our indexes, although a core group of users in our minds when indexing are LIPs themselves.

Indexers and LIPs have much in common, the key focus of our job being to help people find information. But we go about this in quite different ways.

Our monthly Coffee Morning today discussed links, differences and potential collaborations between indexers and library and information professionals (LIPs), joined by members of CILIP. Many indexers come from an this background, and often do this work alongside indexing.
