NE council planners take inspiration:

There’s a major focus on regreening of streets in the plan. ✅6.6 hectares (16 acres) of new green space when mature ✅80% of streets covered by trees ✅20% covered by permeable surfaces ✅full realisation of plan could prevent 667 premature deaths per year

this means planning, inc housing and environment must be mindful of what will reverse our brain drain (QUALITY!) & with close proximity to high speed transport links to the existing hubs such as London (so keep on pushing for #HS3 to NE & beyond, not just across Pennines) end

- create ecosystems of high tech company support. Online meetings now allow this, with ability to tap into expertise from around the world. We don't need to be as parochial and fragmented as before 4/5

- highlight to southern cos & their employees how much they can save, yet maintain periodic hub interaction - SE cos pay twice for location. Once for high rents, then for high salaries so employees can afford high housing costs. (&they end up long term with housing assets++) 3/5

..to be actively developing plans to market the NE as combining high QOL, low cost housing (compared to S), and ability to escape all the bad bits of S. THAT WE ARE THE GOLDILOCKS LOCATION FOR A POST COVID WORLD OF WORK n2/5

Covid is causing lots of terrible things, but one long term +ve for the NE, if our politicians get it right, will be an economic renaissance, because the new realisation across the UK is that there is far more geographical flexibility in work location. Therefore we need....n1/4

Will Newcastle City Council sign up ? And get rid of the hideous Cowgate artificial grass installation.

It's hard to believe but plastic grass really does exist, and some people really do put it in their gardens. Bad for nature, bad for biodiversity, bad for the climate. Yuk. Please sign the petition to have it banned.

Is it for NE councillors ? I fear that in yet enough area we will be bottom of the league and left behind (albeit Newcastle CC making at least some effort)

Spent an hour or so earlier sat watching how this functions (yes I am that sad). It's a clear improvement on what was there before. Raised table slows drivers down and most do give way. Few examples of confusion over who has priority but nothing too bad. Nice one @jonburkeUK & co

Almost everything that could be right in a local high street is in this photo. This street is ready to play its role as a popular, prosperous, safe, beautiful & useful centre of its neighbourhood. Create Streets like this.

How might the politics of new housing look if all of it was this good - with public interventions via planning merely insisting on the types of homes & places which people prefer & in which they flourish? Might we, whisper it, create more new homes? Well done @ADAMarchitectur

can we make NE housing more desirable, like this ?

This is new. In Truro, Cornwall. New homes do not need to desecrate. They can make places better. If we trusted communities more that would happen a lot more often. Homes & photo by @BenPentreath

Yes, I think we need more *local* pubs, coffee shops, community halls & other styles of venue where local people can meet. Social interaction is the bedrock of humanity.

NE has terrible health, despite the best NHS establishments. A change in approach led by @JackieDanielNHS would be fantastic. Must move from mindset of technical patches to sickness, to leading, facilitating & co-producing Public Health solutions with public, 3rd sector & LAs.

NE has some Arizona attributes. Proximity to beauty, cheaper to live. The lockdown shows you don't need your staff based in expensive SE. We need to attract 2nd site / R&D units here, then bud off the new companies. https://t.co/O9Xp3dbP4f

If we had design with this aesthetic standard in NE, I suspect locals would have less opposition to development.

Can you believe that this beautiful housing in West Sussex is new-build, and that it's affordable housing for a housing association?
