Spoke to several Hong Kong bankers, finance and insurance folks about why they came out to protest today. Almost all said police violence this week. Several mentioned violent scenes at CUHK. Said they wanted to show support for students on the front lines.
Indian government advises TV networks not to broadcast anything that "promotes anti-national attitudes." In less than a week, India's government and security forces have already killed more protesters and taken more restrictive measures than Hong Kong and Beijing did in 6 months
Amazing that India's diplomats are busy responding to newspaper articles in foreign countries like this (and blocking social media accounts) at the height of the world's worst outbreak, especially as other countries offer medical aid.
This story is so bizarre -- even for India -- that I have nothing to add: A Hindu nun accused of bomb blasts that killed six people, faked breast cancer, claimed she beat cancer by drinking *cow urine*, & is running in the election for India's ruling BJP.
India's government is encouraging citizens to learn about their controversial citizenship law from a bearded mystic who admitted he hasn't read the legislation and recently tweeted about how corpses can walk.

Unbelievable that India's capital is seeing violent anti-Muslim riots during the visit of a US president. What does it say about India's political stability, law and order capacity and governance during the Modi era?
As houses are being burned to the ground in Khazoori Khas in North East Delhi- there is NO police present in the area.
This is 3rd day of
#DelhiRiots
. Why is this still on?
It's amazing that in India you can be arrested for a Facebook post criticizing Narendra Modi, but not for giving a speech -- widely available online -- that prompted Hindu-Muslim riots in the country's national capital during the high-profile visit of a US president.
“Kapil Mishra should be in jail,” said Rupesh Bathla, a businessman who says he has known Mr. Mishra since they were teenagers. “He started communal riots. He planted hatred in other people’s hearts.”
Wow. According to the Hong Kong government, "expressing an objection in principle to the enactment of the National Security Law" means you don't uphold the Basic Law, and can't be a member of the Legislative Council.
Just saw the Trevor Noah bit on India-Pakistan. India = not amused. "Not only did he fail to understand the severity of the situation between the two neighbouring countries, Noah took racist and stereotypical jibes at the Indian military forces."
The appeals from Indians for oxygen and hospital beds on social media are harrowing and understandable. But they also speak volumes about the unreliability of Indian institutions in times of crisis. You simply can't rely on the system, so you need someone's mobile number.
THREAD: In Hong Kong, we've all been isolating/social-distancing for nearly two months. It wasn't perfect by any means. But Hong Kong started early and has so far managed to contain cases to around ~150, despite incredible exposure to China.
Had a brief encounter with a BJP minister today.
He said because of Modi, there is only one word that matters in Indian elections now: Development.
I asked him about the word "termite," which Amit Shah just used to describe Bangladeshi migrants.
He changed the subject.
Peak Bengal: Book-loving groom stresses he will not accept dowry as he marries a music student who also loves to read. Family, which consists of teachers, travels to a College Street bookshop in Kolkata and buys them 1,000 books as a wedding gift.
I spent a lot of time talking to smart people about what will happen to Hong Kong in 2047 for
@business
. We also spoke to protesters about what they fear most about that date. Here's what they all told me.
New Delhi appears to be in the throes of anti-Muslim riots on a day when it is ranked by far the most polluted city on Earth and as President Donald Trump pays a state visit. Unbelievable.
This was Peel Street in Hong Kong last night. I know the cases are down, but I do believe that might be more than 8 people gathered for a common purpose.
I'm confused. Why is The Hindu, one of India's best newspapers, not using the terms Hindu and Muslim to describe a riot during a US presidential visit?
"...members of the majority community thrashed those from the minority community."
Chinese media are now citing India as example to justify censoring the internet.
"The internet shutdown in India has once again proved that the necessary regulation of the internet is a reasonable choice of sovereign countries based on national interests."
To put this another way: India accidentally killed more of its own troops during a brief clash with Pakistan earlier this year than Pakistan did, even as India's politicians went out on the campaign trail boasting of air strikes.
During the middle of its brief clash with Pakistan, India accidentally shot down its own helicopter, killing six air force personnel and one civilian on the ground, according to
@manupubby
, after an officer ordered a ground-to-air missile fired.
It's amazing to me that Modi can go out and flag off a new train a day after the Kashmir terror attack, and then address a rally and BJP party workers as Imran Khan goes on TV to address his nation about the prospect of war. Remarkable.
It's worth remembering Hong Kong medical workers and activists actually protested very early on to make the govt (which was concerned about economy) take stricter actions. They did so cautiously, with masks, but still risked the virus to do so.
One of the fundamentally broken things about Hong Kong's current Covid situation is that it has neither the scale/labor force/compliance of the mainland to do a draconian lockdown, nor the democratic accountability to ensure balanced, reasonable public health measures.
Good thing India's prime minister built a massive "Statue of Unity" to counteract this sort of hatred. Oh, I see. This is an official BJP account. Nevermind.
Their is lot of similarities between Congress & Tippu
Both were anti Hindu
Both believed in suppressing Hindus
Both were responsible for Killing of Hindus
Both believed in minority appeasement
Both wanted to divide Hindus
No wonder Congress is worshipping tyrant Tippu.

Many Indians praised a former foreign minister for responding on Twitter to all sorts of consular complaints years ago, even though her very involvement highlighted the ministry's bureaucratic inaction on a host of files related to ordinary Indians low down the priority list.
"People in Central are cold blooded, to be honest, they care about making money," one well dressed 40-year-old woman told me. "But right now, we want to show the Hong Kong government that we care."
The hamster culling is truly the icing on the cake of Hong Kong's increasingly degraded global brand in an era of trying to match China's Covid-zero approach. A tipping point in terms of ordinary friends outside of HK just messaging me with links/laughing emojis.

Hong Kong's pro-China political elite get a taste of their own strict Covid policies after forcing them on ordinary residents for two years. Guess what? They found it arbitrary, inflexible and pointless, even as the system bent to accomodate them.
Hong Kong police chief warns the organizer of some of the city's biggest protests that it may have violated the national security law... before it was actually enacted?
I can't believe it but Modi's first press conference as prime minister on Indian soil ended without him fielding a single question. Amit Shah answered everything. Then they got up and left. Remarkable.
As a comparison, Hong Kong and NYC roughly same size. HK has about 150 cases and 4 deaths after nearly 8 weeks of the virus. NYC implemented distancing nearly 1 1/2 months later -- and already has nearly 500 cases.
A former BJP politician and the current sitting governor of the state of Meghalaya is apparently tweeting that Indians should effectively boycott the state of Kashmir and Kashmiri businesses elsewhere in India.
An appeal from a retired colonel of the Indian Army: Don’t visit Kashmir, don’t go to Amarnath for the next 2 years. Don’t buy articles from Kashmir emporia or Kashmiri tradesman who come every winter. Boycott everything Kashmiri.
I am inclined to agree
Daily reminder of India's air pollution crisis: These blackened nasal filters are from my partner's yoga session this morning. It lasted just *one hour.* She was inside, with no air purifier, while outside the AQI was about 180. This is just a regular day.

Good news: Tested negative for Omicron (with expensive private test). Ready to fly back to Hong Kong from Canada after first trip outside the city in two years.
Bad news: Your Air Canada flight has been banned by the Hong Kong government, a day before departure.
Amazing also that 1) There is no point number 1, and the letter starts on point number 2, and 2) the letterhead on this formal missive has an email address scribbled out and added in by pen (something I doubt the Indian bureaucracy would accept if submitted by ordinary folks)
Additionally, it's somewhat to surprising to me that it's actually news for doctors -- in 2019 -- to come out and say drinking cow urine doesn't cure cancer.
Ah, a Hindu nationalist group is shooting a gun at an effigy of Gandhi (which apparently oozed blood) and garlanding a statue of his assassin. Carry on.

Truly stunning. In the midst of a raging pandemic, with thousands dying every day, Modi's party is promising vaccines... if you vote his party into power in Bengal.
Always eye-opening to see state-level campaigning tactics on Twitter, among an audience they weren't intended for.
Instead, over the course of two years of Beijing eroding the city's democracy and local politics, Hong Kong's ruling class has been completely severed from the people, and chained ever-more tightly to performative acts to signal fealty to China, rather than its own residents.
Of all the stark differences between Singapore and Hong Kong as they diverged on the pandemic, SG's steady, confident public health messaging, including big picture exit strategy, has stood out to me. In contrast, HK officials sound panicked, reactionary, always on the back foot.
