With our latest cleanup completed, Ocean Voyages Institute has now removed almost 700,000 pounds of plastic during our at-sea cleanups. Everything we remove is recycled, repurposed and upcycled. Nothing ends up in a landfill or back in the ocean!

Many people ask what happens to all the plastic we collect during our at-sea cleanups. We are committed that 100% of what we remove is upcyled, repurposed and/or reused. Nothing will end up in a landfill or back in the ocean! Each year we find new partners to help with this goal!

@lappupper Some goes to labs for testing, some is given to artists for educational pieces, most however is being shipped to Southern California where is will be turned into building materials, others will go to Nor Cal and will be turned into fuel. The rest goes to H-Power for clean energy

@szetoinsitu @SMWadgymar Unfortunately there were quite a few fish, who had been trapped and died in the ghostnets before we recovered them. There was also a turtle and only the shell remained. Our removal methods are minimally invasive and we do not have any collateral bycatch of note.

@FeatheredSchist Our methods are as non invasive as possible. We are not skimming or collecting large swathes of ocean, we are removing specific ghostnets by lifting them out of the ocean one at a time. These are the same ghost nets which are killing countless fish, turtles, etc.

A nice article from #SFGate . They point out something important, we are able to scale up our cleanups now and the only limit on how much we remove is financial support. We have been fully funded thus far by individuals and Foundations.

We agree 100% on this. The existing Marine Sanctuaries in many cases need to have size increased. For example we have been advocating for the Galapagos Sanctuary to be extended to 350miles to protect the fragile ecosystem and marine life from the damage of huge fishing fleets.

This is a great article, thought sadly it has taken over a decade for the world to start to take notice of the severity of this problem. Our 1st scientific expedition in the North Pacific in 2009 took hundreds of samples and we found plastic in every water & biologic sample.
