The majority of outpatient services we looked at were delivered via telemedicine in 2021, compared to <1% before the pandemic📞. Telemedicine may help address access barriers that leave mental health conditions undertreated🧠

Psychotherapy was the most common & costly service out-of-pocket🏥. More people were treated for their diagnosis by a non-psychiatrist (such as a primary care doctor), than by a psychiatrist👩‍⚕️

Enrollees with these diagnoses paid for a larger share of mental health services out-of-pocket, compared to their other health services📊. This despite mental health parity regulations that aim to close this gap🏛️

In line with prior work, we found huge variation in facility fees even within each level. The top quarter of level 5 fees were more than $1,300.

Over time, facility fees have been billed at more complex levels, but also grew more expensive at all levels. In 2004, level 5 fees made up 5% of all claims and cost $100. By 2021, level 5s were 20% of claims and cost $930, on average.

We find that ED facility fees increased over 531% from 2004-2021, while prof fees increased 132%. Urgent care and physician office fees grew even more slowly.
