There isn't one; it should plainly be taken out of council hands. And to make it worse, this level of spending on a service most council taxpayers don't use or interact with completely corrodes trust in councils themselves.
Over half of council tax goes on social care. What's the principled case for social care being paid from local taxation?

What do you reckon the most darkly funny moment of the Brexit saga was? . I reckon MPs demanding indicative votes on alternatives to May’s deal for weeks, finally getting them, and voting against all 8 different forms of Brexit has to be up there.

I think this is right. I wonder also whether it's why the government is in such a jam. Labour is clearly on the 'system' side, but needs to justify that by showing it works, but can't fix anything because of the fiscal position, which in turn bolsters the 'anti-system' side.
Think one of the reasons traditional parties are struggling to tackle Reform is that they’re failing to understand how their rise relates to the growing importance of the “system vs anti system axis” in our politics and the diminishing of tribal Lab/Tory rivalries.
