I really wish British politicians would stop using the word "playbook".

Very excited to say that I have been appointed to the Attorney General's Panel of Junior Counsel to the Crown this morning by Lord Hermer KC. Enormously looking forward to getting stuck into the interesting legal work done by government in my areas of practice.

This evening sees last sunset after 8pm in London until April 17, 2026 yesterday also experienced the first 6am or later sunrise since mid April. The early birds will increasingly notice this more in coming weeks. We are now really on the downturn.

Learning that I could zoom in and 'immerse myself' in the cities I had built — even when they were low poly graphics on the family's ancient, stuttering computer — absolutely blew my mind.

They should remaster Empire Earth for modern computers. I spent so many hours on that game as a kid.

Nor would any judge have viewed a political speech given to reassert public order during riots as an “instruction”, if they even watched the speech at all. Criticise some sentencing, absolutely. But why on earth would any independent judge feel the need to “follow orders”?.

Ridiculous to view Starmer’s speech saying rioters would face remand/imprisonment as an “instruction to the judiciary” or evidence of “political prosecution”. Nobody thinks that when politicians say (eg) drug dealers or thieves should be sent to prison. This is the same thing.

When did it become the norm for promotional roundels (“now a major motion picture!”) to be printed directly onto book covers — thus ruining the cover art — rather than put on via stickers? It is so, so annoying!.

There isn't one; it should plainly be taken out of council hands. And to make it worse, this level of spending on a service most council taxpayers don't use or interact with completely corrodes trust in councils themselves.

Over half of council tax goes on social care. What's the principled case for social care being paid from local taxation?

Discovered an album called Promises, by Floating Points, Pharaoh Sanders and the LSO, and Movement 6 on it is one of the most exquisitely beautiful things I've ever heard. Completely mesmerising.

My local museum recently sacked a load of volunteers who had volunteered for decades and now, in an incredibly random move, has dedicated itself to Kiribati fishing techniques.

And has since sworn an oath to do right to all manner of people without fear, favour, affection or ill will. I know this is a bit of an old fashioned view but I do think we should trust that people mean what they say, particularly when taking on senior judicial office like this.

I've noticed a few sports teams seem to have chants which consist of just "you X!" (like "you Bears!" for the Birmingham Bears or "you Os!" for Leyton Orient) and I've never really understood why — is it meant to be short for "come on, you X" or is it something different?.

Just received a 'summer roundup' from the Lib Dems. A little surprised to see "cool hubs" as the number one story, above party policy on (i) the EU; (ii) the war in Gaza; and (iii) the NHS. Is that really the top priority?.

What do you reckon the most darkly funny moment of the Brexit saga was? . I reckon MPs demanding indicative votes on alternatives to May’s deal for weeks, finally getting them, and voting against all 8 different forms of Brexit has to be up there.

Received an email advertising "two brand new West End musicals". Great, I thought! Looked at the descriptions. One is an adaptation of a film, and one is a greatest hits jukebox musical.

I think this is right. I wonder also whether it's why the government is in such a jam. Labour is clearly on the 'system' side, but needs to justify that by showing it works, but can't fix anything because of the fiscal position, which in turn bolsters the 'anti-system' side.

Think one of the reasons traditional parties are struggling to tackle Reform is that they’re failing to understand how their rise relates to the growing importance of the “system vs anti system axis” in our politics and the diminishing of tribal Lab/Tory rivalries.
