i'm forever grateful to the people that came together to make the 01 happen. fifty nights, seven houses, trading notes and demos late into the morning—seeing the future before anyone else. (and we still made enough Lights for all contributors)

Finally, we made some incredible American manufacturing progress with Facture Design, and we're MIT licensing every document. Dozens of hours of regulatory research. Vendor options for every component. Firmware diagrams, UX flows... You could start a hardware company with this.

There's a new generation of 01 hardware too. Born from the 01 community, the new @humandevices team is shipping 01 dev kits next month. Decades of manufacturing experience on that team + an original 01 designer.

But the special thing about the 01 was always the open software that powers community builds, not our speaker/mic/button. So today we're also releasing the 01.1 software update, which dramatically improves existing builds + opens doors to new ones.

First, you can still purchase a standalone device. a $30 Android phone running the 01 app in kiosk mode :) It has a screen. Camera. Haptic feedback. SIM card. Available internationally. Better in every way at a fraction of the cost.

Today we're discontinuing the 01 light, refunding everyone, and launching a free 01 app. We're also open-sourcing all our manufacturing materials + a major 01.1 update. Why? Focus. This software will change the world. That deserves our full attention. Also phones 🧵/8
