Just want to check, how many languages did the British speak of the countries it colonised?

If a foreign national is entirely incapable of speaking English, what are they doing living in our country? Why are they here? How can they give more than they take? The answer is simple - they can't. It doesn't matter if they arrived legally. They should be sent home.

There’s no much to say here from language used to the portrayal of the different groups of people being written even for the same “flags” issue but again I’m not discussing that I’m discussing the tonality & the way in which each article is built & it’s “impartiality” as news.

Those quoted in the TH article by the BBC are “officials” in some capacity or other, no local has been engaged or quoted like in the BHM BBC article. There is no real person feel so it makes it easier to politicise & throw a generalisation over the community being written about.

Have been in news rooms for a few years and in one of my previous roles as Race and Diversity reporter my role was to engage w/ “hard to reach communities” but reality is, these communities aren’t hard to reach - & if they are it’s not their fault - they are just hardly reached.

I wonder if TH Palestine flags article was written about a non-Muslim community if it would have been written in the same tonality and in the same identity driver conflictual way? I honestly don’t think so. In the TH no local ordinary voice is quoted, in the BHM it is.

You are probably thinking it’s not that deep Mariam, but it is. Well it is to me because I’m exhausted hearing that news is impartial. It’s simply not. Media plays a key role in building narratives about people in this country and the news media is complicit in this not exempt.

Language used in the BHM article is more practical/not political compared to the TH one is overtly politicised. One is presented in a culture war context and other is not. BHM article identity isn’t made front and centre, it’s v secondary if that. TH article identity is central.

It’s always interesting to pay attention to how news is delivered. There most certainly is a specific tonality behind each which I find super interesting because they are both “news” articles. One would read them as if no opinion is being sold to them - but I’d argue there is.

Interesting how these two stories both about flags are written: British flags/union jacks: https://t.co/VeSpvITfwK Palestine flags https://t.co/1wJ9oCSmE4 One is made to be a national political controversy & the other an administrative issue. One neutral, one conflictual.

NOTHING TO SEE HERE, GUYS - possible +300% soon ! Just a random microcap, NextNRG ($NXXT), casually mentioned by Forbes in the same breath as Amazon ($AMZN) and Kroger ($KR). According to Forbes, NextNRG (NXXT) already provides fueling services and trucking support for Amazon

I mean I guess you can say pique isn’t used as much so can forgive that one? Maybe? There are worrying patterns around language overall. Language experts must be very upset in this post ChatGPT world.

I’m not very pedantic about language and grammar but the fact that no one seems to know the difference between pique and peak is really starting to worry me

It is so late, Ms Kallas. Only sanctions can stop Israel. Suspending the EU agreement with Israel is a must. Anything less will be just performance, which the millions of Europeans who are grieving for the genodice in Gaza, would much prefer being spared from.

The killing of civilians seeking aid in Gaza is indefensible. I spoke again with @gideonsaar to recall our understanding on aid flow and made clear that IDF must stop killing people at distribution points. All options remain on the table if Israel doesn’t deliver on its pledges

3 years ago I began investigating abuse in so-called calming rooms at Whitefield special school – after 500 hours of CCTV was discovered Now I’ve obtained the footage - children are pushed into rooms, pinned up against walls with rugby pads and left in vomit

The Daily Mail just won the right to say Douglas Barrowman has "cocktail-sausage fingers". And it won the right to say his actions ruined thousands of lives, led to two suicides, and that he lied about his ties to a likely fraudulent tax scheme. Thread.
