Compared to English names that describe physical characteristics of animal bodies, Malaysian names tend to be rootwords of their own 🥰. And even if names do describe the animals, they're done in fascinating ways: reduplication, metaphors, affixation, etc.
malay names for our wildlife are absolutely beatiful. the orchid mantis is locally called belalang sentadu anggerik, the spotted wood owl is burung hantu carik kafan, the malayan weasel is pulasan tanah & the reticulated python is ular sawa batik. im loving the creativity here.

Rather than learning a word of the week, why not learn a root of the week? One root can help students work out 20-30 other words in English!. All these words are related to "writing" and come from the Latin "scribere - to write" (scrip, scrib)✏️. #rootoftheweek #rootwords #vocab
