If somebody tries to convince you of a conspiracy theory about the origin and spread of coronavirus, ask them to first explain what a virus is, and how it causes disease. If they don’t have a clue, don’t trust their theory. A PhD isn’t a must – but basic biology is.
The danger is that if we invest too much in developing Al and too little in developing human consciousness, the very sophisticated artificial intelligence of computers might only serve to empower the natural stupidity of humans.
This is a day of pain. The cruel ambition of one person inflicts terror and violence on tens of millions, and pushes the whole of humanity towards disaster. We are right on the edge of the abyss.
The first coronavirus dictatorship
Netanyahu lost the elections. So under pretext of fighting corona, he has closed the Israeli parliament, ordered people to stay in their homes, and is issuing whatever emergency decrees he wishes. This is called a dictatorship.
In history, context is everything. Had I heard Biden's victory speech 4 years ago, I might have found it rather cliched. But after the last four troubled years, it actually brought tears to my eyes.
Deeply concerned by the inadequate response to the targeting of Israeli civilians by Hamas - a disturbing trend in the global left's political culture. On the statement signed by tens of Israel-based academics & activists committed to peace & human rights:
The terrorists went from house to house, systematically murdering families, killing parents in front of their children and taking hostages, even babies and grandmothers. How did the state of Israel go missing in action?

And what might such a plan look like?

Right now the minds of Israelis & Palestinians are filled with their own pain: no space left to even acknowledge the pain of the other side. But outsiders should make an effort to empathize with all suffering humans & help maintain a space for peace.

To defeat epidemics we need to trust science and countries need to trust each other. Irresponsible politicians undermined this trust. We need to regain it. You can’t defeat a pandemic with propaganda and isolation. The real antidote is scientific knowledge and global cooperation.
If you want to preserve democracy, vote for politicians who respect the institutions that investigate and publish the truth. Vote for a party that tells people that they have the right to elect whatever government they like, but they cannot elect whatever truth they like.

I'm deeply saddened by events in my home region & the suffering inflicted on many innocent people. This violence is no natural disaster or spontaneous outburst. Hatred needs to be sown & watered for years, & large-scale violence is always the result of calculated human decisions.
Humanity's battle with Covid-19 has so far been a scientific triumph coupled with a political fiasco. A year into the pandemic, we still don't have any global leadership or global action plan. Hopefully, in 2021 our politics will finally catch up with our science. Happy New Year.
Here are 11 books I enjoyed reading in 2023. The first is 20 years old, the last is not out yet (in English), and all are recommended:

* 'Data Feminism' by Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein (2020)

In recent months, humankind learned how important it is to listen to scientific experts when they warn us about epidemics. Now how about listening to their warnings regarding ecological collapse? The current global crisis is an opportunity to stop learning the hard way.

The best reason to learn history is not in order to predict the future, but to free yourself of the past and imagine alternative destinies. Of course, this is not total freedom – we cannot avoid being shaped by the past – but some freedom is better than none.

We are all living together on a single planet, which is threatened by our own actions. And if you don't have some kind of global cooperation, nationalism is just not on the right level to tackle the problems, whether it's climate change or whether it's technological disruption.
For thousands of years, the scientific road to growth was blocked because people believed that holy scriptures and ancient traditions already contained all the important knowledge the world had to offer. This was the position of most premodern human civilizations. The greatest…

Democracy’s under threat, in Israel &other countries. In a democracy the winner shouldn’t take it all. If they do, it’s no longer a democracy. The most precious aspect of liberal democracy isn’t majority rule, but limiting the power of the ruler in order to protect citizen rights

Populist leaders are on the rise around the world, attacking the liberal global order. They haven't explained what will replace the order they have destroyed, and the result is the disorder, chaos and violence we are seeing today.
Humans have the amazing ability to cooperate in very large numbers because we are able to create, spread and believe in fictional stories. Money is one example of this, as discussed on the Pitchfork Economics podcast.
