8/ If everything breaks our way, AI becomes a force for superagency. If we fail to meet the moment, we risk replaying the worst of the China shock. This time, not town by town, but at the level of cognitive identity itself.

7/ We can use these tools to help people climb the of work, by embedding intelligence into the tools themselves. We can lower the cost of learning, speed up the acquisition of expertise, and build systems where more people do high-leverage work.

6/ Unlike globalization, AI can be built as a collaborative force, not just an automating one. We can design it to amplify human agency, not replace it. That’s what excites me: the idea that AI, if steered right, could unlock economic agency for millions.

5/ One of the lessons from the China shock should guide us: the fallout wasn't inevitable. It was the result of policy, of design choices, and of a failure to invest in the people and regions left behind.

3/ Where the China shock was regional and industry-specific, the AI shock is cognitive and diffuse. For example, the shock isn’t localized to factories, but expertise. It threatens to do what globalization couldn’t undermine: professional, white-collar, and knowledge-based work.

2/ David believes that the coming age of AI isn’t solely a technology shift, but a paradigm shift in the way labor markets work. The key difference between now and the China Shock? This one hits everywhere at once.

1/ In 2001, China joined the WTO. Over the next decade, 1M+ U.S. manufacturing jobs vanished, entire regions hollowed out, and the political consequences are still reverberating. MIT’s David Autor says something bigger could be on the horizon, called the AI shock:

We're taking a big step towards medical superintelligence. AI models have aced multiple choice medical exams – but real patients don’t come with ABC answer options. Now MAI-DxO can solve some of the world’s toughest open-ended cases with higher accuracy and lower costs.
