New paper from our lab. Short summary: bats are not flying mice & their diet matters. Fun team effort @TSchountz @caylee_falvo

#Bat diet and #pathogen #spillover events: @danewingcrowley @rainamontana &co show that bats' #antibodies have higher diversity but lower avidity than those of mice; protein restriction enhances avidity, potentially impacting spillover risk #PLOSBiology https://t.co/zFIl8F9Uo2

This duplication occurred in Vespertilionidae, the largest bat family, and has been retained in many species. The implications of this adaptive immune strategy for the evolutionary success of this family, or the ability of bats to harbor viruses, will be fascinating to explore.

Both loci are functional but are used differentially across cell subsets. B cell receptors from the smaller, less complex locus are overrepresented in the naïve B cell repertoire; B cells using the second, larger locus preferentially contribute to antigen-experienced populations.

So excited to share this work, led by Taylor Pursell as part of a collaboration with @ScottBoydLab. Some bat species have two immunoglobulin heavy chain loci on different chromosomes, changing what we know about mammalian adaptive immunity. https://t.co/I8zg3XW4Su

Just two days after going down a rabbit hole of albinism/leucism in bats, our team stumbled upon this beautiful blonde-haired, red-eyed Carollia castanea in Northwestern Ecuador! We’re not sure how to classify this combination of pigment loss - thoughts?

33 years ago tonight, 14 women went to bed thinking about their finals, future in STEM and the upcoming holiday season. They didn’t know that these dreams threatened a man’s sense of self worth and that they wouldn’t survive to see their goals and aspirations become a reality.
