Excellent news for academic trainees in England - new reforms negotiated by @BMAResidents colleagues address the gap in provision for those on integrated academic training pathways and pave the way for a standardised honorary NHS contract. @BMA_Academics
After months of negotiations, the BMA has secured reforms to the exception reporting system ensuring resident doctors are paid for the extra hours they work, with changes rolling out across NHS hospitals by Feb 2026.

Potential clinical academics are being lost to short term funding, lack of protected research time, and rising service demands... We are training some of the world’s brightest doctors, then encouraging them to walk away from the NHS and, in some cases, the UK entirely.
The UK is rapidly losing medical academics and without them the NHS 10 year plan is at risk. The upcoming NHS workforce plan is an opportunity to turn this shortage around according to MASC Co-Chairs David Strain and Jonathan Gibb:

Absolutely - the sheer depth and breadth of medical undergraduate/postgraduate curricula provides the skills for doctors to work out solutions from first principles when the pattern does not fit. Something we need to consider when 'training to task' @BMA_Academics
Strong statement. Especially on dealing with uncertainty - how do we manage patients who do not comfortably fit onto a pathway or protocol? In 2025, with increasing patient age and complexity, we need highly trained doctors capable of critical assessment more than ever.

Great work by @BMAstudents. Urgent need for Government action to prevent medical students not being able to succeed on courses and miss out on crucial learning experiences due to financial hardship. #FixOurFunding @TheBMA
Following intense lobbying within parliament, we're pleased to see the unique funding challenges medical students face highlighted in the @APPGStudents Commission on Students in Higher Education earlier this summer.

And, as the @TheBMA response says ‘The boost to research and development must translate to clinical academics - the doctors who lead the life sciences sector and ensure this research translates into better treatment for patients.’
We recognise the Chancellor's commitment to national renewal through vital NHS & health research funding during challenging fiscal circumstances. Few investments deliver co-benefits of improved health & economic growth. Read our #SpendingReview response: https://t.co/NCdXyyELP6

BMA Students and @BMA_Academics are pleased to report that, following lobbying, NHS England has agreed to form a working group with the BMA within the next 8 to 12 weeks to decide the future of SFP recruitment. We will continue to push for fair and merit-based recruitment to SFP
We’ve written to @NHSEngland demanding a fairer, better process for future SFP applicants. They promised they would consult students and academics, but haven’t. Today, we’re calling it out. Read our letter below👇and our full statement here: https://t.co/eR6Ww48QAs

More neurology integration in psych training was called for >10 years ago in the academy report on strengthening academic psychiatry ( https://t.co/iMQ4kHR57e), sad to see not much progress...

🧠 New paper out in BJPsych Bulletin: We surveyed psychiatry trainees across the UK— >40% are interested in #neuropsychiatry, but only 10% expect to get enough training. Trainees want: ✔️ More access ✔️ Neurology integration ✔️ Formal accreditation https://t.co/LkVMAyfyqW

"There is a severe shortage of doctors working as clinical academics, which threatens the future of both research and medical education. We encourage government to address inequalities in total remuneration that disincentivise clinical academia as a career path" @BMA_Academics
We’ve responded to the @NHSEngland Medical Training Review. With soaring numbers of applications for specialty training without a rise in the number of places on offer, it's clear that postgraduate training needs urgent reform. Read more 👉

The DDRB have some serious questions to answer. Even after reforms, there’s been a failure to recommend restoring pay. We saw UK govt put constraints in the remit letter, set an affordability context, the report was late and then held on to by UK govt for weeks 1/2
