A new piece over at my...blog this one taking aim at ethical or moral theories that take nature and nature's purposiveness as giving us a set of binding moral obligations. Enjoy! (Link, below.)

the church's tradition of fawning over imperishability has been so regrettable in that we could've had so many more cool skeletons on display instead of the unaesthetic mummies

In an increasingly algorithmic society going into seclusion will become increasingly meaningful, even useful. The hermit will return. Disappearing will no longer be a gap in the CV, but a prominent line in it, like how it would attract the court's attention in Tang era China

This is evidence why level-headed conservatives who look at Webbon and his ilk and go, "Wow, INSANE," can recognize that gay marriage is actually the boon they didn't know they needed. In any union of man and man or woman and woman, sure, there's attraction and all, but you're in

It's kinda bizarre how the guardrails Anerican AI companies put in place to make sure their programs produce only culturally- and socially-acceptable stuff can result in the opposite. Like, I prompted @OpenAI's Sora 2 to produce a clip of a bunch of kids just returning from a

Pragmatism as a theory of truth is basically indefensible. But like logical positivism, British empiricism, continental rationalism and medieval scholasticism it has important insights which we should allow to transform our worldview before we dismiss it.

This is actually not nearly as bad as what my traditionalist and hyperconservative fellow Catholics would do if they had their druthers, for such followers of Christ would rather burn folks like me at the stake.

My issue is this is a textbook motte and bailey. Sure, in the weaker sense it’s ā€œverifiedā€, but that’s not what philosophers mean when they say ā€œp is verifiedā€. As I said there’s sufficient warrant to assert evolution is true, but that’s not verification.

@No5mallf3at I see that I was mistaken to assume that you meant something reasonable by "verified," I apologize.

@analyticatheism Most probable does not in any world equal true and if you believe it does you’ve definitely drunken some cool aid. Take not that ā€œempirically verifiableā€ was the wording of the original post I was responding to, so if that’s not what you’re defending why are you here?

I’m glad people are noticing this. Insurance is the second biggest expense in my life. $2,000 for a family of four, but we still have an out of pocket max of ~$15,000. So healthcare has to be budgeted at close to $40,000 per year.

With 2026 ACA plans officially live, we can now see the impact of Congress' failure to extend enhanced premium tax credits. A 64 YO couple in Morgantown with household income of $85k will see their premiums for the same plan increase by over $4,000 *per month*

tbh I don’t think we tell kids how small the window is to be exceptional at many physical or intense intellectual pursuits. You basically have from 15-35 to become meaningfully world class at many things, which usually means starting in early teens

Fun opportunity (for me, anyway) to remind folks that Duns Scotus anticipated the early moderns by claiming that we cannot directly perceive substances. We can infer their existence, but all we have direct perceptual access to are accidental forms. https://t.co/YnHbpyFQKZ

It’s a very easy case to make. 1. If you can’t see something, it doesn’t exist. 2. You can’t see immaterial things. 3. Therefore, immaterial things don’t exist. Nobody has ever refuted Premise 1 by showing me something that I can’t see but which nevertheless exists.

A "clove" is not a unit of garlic. Normal cloves vary in size by a factor of like 5. It's as bad as "pinch." You should be telling me in grams, fractions of a head, or LD50 for vampires.
