To walk down memory lane I did today what I used to do growing up in Kolkata—read Tagore & Nazrul Islam. They came from different backgrounds, had different styles but how beautifully they wrote. What drew them to each other was their shared universalism & instinctive secularism.

Growing up in Calcutta I had at least three aunts who, even in normal times, would wash every coin and currency note that came into their houses. Visitors had to sit on washable chairs that would be scrubbed as soon as they left. These eccentricities caused much laughter. 1/2
