If you feel bad about not understanding when intellectuals talk, here’s a secret. A lot of the talk is like the twitter of birds. Outsiders will get caught if they try to join in, but that doesn’t mean the insiders understand what the insiders are saying.

My new Factful Friday is up on LI! 👉 Everyone talks about reshoring. And the anecdotes are real. 👉But the economy-wide data tell a different story. ⭐ This Factful Friday shows that the US manufacturing base is now more exposed to China than at any point since the 1990s. 👉And

My tribute to my dad, who passed away last month in the UK. He was a proud Indian immigrant *and* a proud British citizen. His life story is one long rebuttal to the nativists, bigots and xenophobes.

2 Dec is Gary Becker’s birthday. Introducing him at the World Bank in 2013 I had noted that many economists describe themselves as “Beckerian” but his bigger achievement was that many like me call themselves “non-Beckerian”. To have a school described as “non-you” is something.

Good to see Dr Mahbub ul Haq in the illustrous list. His ideas and leadership resulted in the Human Development Index — now a global measure of development.

It may be folly to rank, but to me David Hume is the numero uno among philosophers. Re-reading these short essays reaffirms the belief. What made him special is that he was also a wonderful human being, full of warmth and with progressive values.
