2 Dec is Gary Becker’s birthday. Introducing him at the World Bank in 2013 I had noted that many economists describe themselves as “Beckerian” but his bigger achievement was that many like me call themselves “non-Beckerian”. To have a school described as “non-you” is something.

It may be folly to rank, but to me David Hume is the numero uno among philosophers. Re-reading these short essays reaffirms the belief. What made him special is that he was also a wonderful human being, full of warmth and with progressive values.
